OBITUARY

I MR A. I). CARROLL I The death of Mr Anthony David Carroll, of Soulhbridge, occurred on Friday in Christchurch. Mr Carroll was apparently making a good recovery after a serious operation, when he became unconscious, and failed to recover. He was the eldest son of pioneer settlers in the Southbridge district. After leaving the Southbridge school, where he was educated, he was for some time in the service of Dr. T. J. Withers, and later spent some years at "Beachcroft," when the property was owned by Mr John McMillan. Eventually he went farming on his own account, and a number of years ago took over the property at South - bridge formerly held by Mr C. J. Lewton. Through hard work, close applic tion. and good judgment in his farming operations, he met with success. When a young man he helped as a musician at many social functions, and often entertained as a stopdancer. At an early age he formed the St. John's branch of the Hibernian Society, and was one of its most enthusiastic members, serving for a period as president. Latterly he filled the office of lodge sick visitor. Mr Carroll occupied a warm place in the affections of all who became acquainted with him. He was a man of upright character. He married Miss Annie Christev. eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs John Christev of Southbridge. and is survived by 'a widow and a daughter, aged eight. MR A. WYNNE ICNITFD I'l-f.SH. The death has occurred of Mr William Corey, at. his home here, from pneumonia. He was 68 years old. Mr Corey, once a Pennsylvania coalminer, rose to become president, of the United States Steel Corporation. His marriage to Miss Mabelle Oilman, a musical comedy star in 1907, when he retired from the leadership of the steel industry, stirred two continents.
