At Turin, Beccali beat J. E. Lovelock by five yards in the final of the 1500 metres in 3min 49 l-ssec, equalling Jules Ladoumegue's world's record. The duel aroused tremendous interest. The Italian set a terrific pace, dropping all except Lovelock, and at halfway the pair were leading the others by 60 yards. Beccali three times attempted to drop the New Zealander, who responded gamely, but in the final sprint Beccali won the finest race of his career. He finished strongly. Afterwards he embraced and kissed Lovelock repeatedly. LOVELOCK'S RACE IN SCOTLAND ALL-COMERS' RECORD BROKEN (rROU CUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, August 8. In the mile invitation race at the Glasgow Rangers' sports at Ibrox Park, on August 5, J. E. Lovelock (Oxford University) failed in his attempt to beat his own world's record for the mile (4min 7 3-ssec), but he broke the Scottish all-comers' record by 2 3-ssec, winning the event in 4min 13 3-ssec. R. H. Thomas (R.A.F.) was second in 4min 14 l-ssec, and T. M. Riddell, the Scottish mile champion, was third in 4min 15sec, beating his own Scottish record of 4min 18sec, set up two years ago. The previous all-comers' record stood to the credit of Cyril Ellis. Lovelock was given a tremendous reception by the crowd of 50,000.
