FOOTBALL

RANFURLY SHIELD SOUTHLAND TEAM ARRIVES PROSPECT FOR TO-MORROW The Southland team arrived in Christchurch last night from Timaru, and arrangements are complete for the Ranfurly Shield match at Lancaster Park to-morrow afternoon. The visitors will field a very i.t, fast, and heavy side, and to resist their challenge Canterbury will have to produce very good football. The Southland team was met, at the railway station last night by officials of the Canterbury Eugby Union and conveyed to the Dominion Hotel, where it will stay while in Christchurch. Last night there was no official entertainment. The team wul train at Lancaster Park this morning and attend the South Island secondary schools' Rugby tournament at the Show Ground.-, as quests of the Canterbury Rugby Union, this afternoon. To-night it will be entertained at one of the city picture theatres. After the match to-morrow there will be a complimentary dinner to the visiting team at Warner's Hotel, and on Sunday, if it is desired, a motor tour of the city and suburbs will be made. The Southland team leave.; from Lyttelton for "Wellington by ferry steamer on Monday night. Southland's Heavy Forwards. In comparing the two teams on paper for to-morrow's encounter, the most striking feature is the weight of the Southland forwards. They average more than 14 and more than one . tone heavier than the Canterbury forwards. The vi.Mting pack will be one of the heaviest that ha:-. been seen on Lancaster Park for a long period, and according to reputation, is capable of producing an attractive display. Canterbury will lack nothing in mobility in loose rucking, and in the open the forwards are extremely fast, including as they do some men with more than average scoring ability.

Even in the backs the visitors V have an advantage in weight, averaging eight pounds heavier a man. The teams, details of weights bein:j given in parentheses, are as follow. 4 .: Southland. Full-back—G. Porter (list 21b,>. Three-quarters—J. H. Geddes (12st 21b), N. Mitchell (12st 101b), A. McKay (I2st>. Five-eighths—R. Sharp 'list Gib), D. G. Grant (captain, 12st 41b). Half-back—G. Thomas (10st 121b). Forwards—R. Donnelly (12st Sib), J. Mattingly (13st 71b), C. George 'l4st 21b), G. Purdue <lsst 71b), C. Pawson <l4st), W. Southern (14s 01b), R. Berry (14st 121b), T. Metcalf G3st 31b.'. Canterbury. Full-back—G. T. Nolan (list 111b;. Three-quarters—N. Dunshea (12st), C. J. Oliver (12st 21b), G. F. Hart (list 81b). Five-eighths—K. R. Hazelhurst (list 41b), K. S. Mortlock (list yib). Half-back—T. Mullan Gist). Forwards—A. I. Cottrell G3st Sib), J. Wade Gist 121b), A. Bowes (12st 61b), A. 11. Andrews (13st 61b), A. M. Hartnell (13st 81b), G. J. Howell (13st 21b), J. E. Manchester (Hst), It K. King (13st 61b). Emergencies—Forwards: A. Bourne (12st 21b), F. J. Foley <l2st 111b). Backs: C. H. McPhail (list 91b), N. Bouterey (9st Clb). Notes on Visiting: Players. G. Porter, the full-back, is very sound, and as a goal-kicker must be one of the best in the Dominion. He has kicked penalties for Southland from remarkable distances. It was his kicking that won the memorable match against Wairarapa in 1929 when Southland won the shield. In the three-quarter line the centre, N. A. Mitchell, appears to be marked out for a bright career in big Rugby. He is very young, but is heavy, fast, has a strong fend, and is solid on defence. Both the wings have pace, but McKay has played rather patchy football in Southland this year according to reports. The half-back, G. Thomas, has a reputation for cio,ver play close to the scrum, and some of his straight thrusts have opened up scoring movements. He has a weakness in passing and often the five-eighths have difficulty in linking up with him.

D. G. Grant, the captain, will be at second live-eighths, and R. Sharp at first. Grant, will be well known to Canterbury spectators, having represented University and Canterbury some years ago. Grant is a very solid inside back and extremely cool. Sharp is capable of an excellent display also when the half's passing is clean and he is an accurate drop kick. The front -ow men, C. George. J Mattingly, and Tt. Donnelly, have played together for three seasons, and are a formidable combination. Southern is not fast, but is an honest worker. Purdue has been playing on the side of the scrum with indifferent success. R. Berry played for Merivalc a few seasons ago, and at that time promised to develop into a line stamp of loose forward. Metcalfe, very fast, a good handler, and dangerous from a scoring position, and Pawson, comolete the scrum. Pawson is a brother of J. C. Pawson, the Christchurch Club's centre-threequarter. Firm Ground Wanted. "If our team goes as it should, the Canterbury team will know it has been playing when the match is finished," said Mr Harold Sti-ang, manager of the Southland team, to a reporter last evening. The forwards, he said, were a heavy bunch, and had played a splendid game against South Canterbury. The same pack would be fielded for the match to-morrow. The players had found the ground for the South Canterbury match a little hard, but they would prefer a firm ground for to-morrow's match. If conditions were suitable they would open up the game as much as possible. He had not seen- the Canterbury team in action, and did not know its style of play. In any case football was too uncertain a game for anyone to prophesy the result of a match. Thomas had improved wonderfully in the hands of the masseur, and it was hoped that he would be quite fit for the match. Sharp was really a first five-eighths, and played in that position in club football. Mr Strang considers that at least three of the forwards, Purdue, Berry, and Metcalfe, have a good chance for selection in the South Island team. If there were better forwards available, then the South Island was going to have a very fine forward tea: .

There were about 35 persons in the Southland party, including the team, Southland officials, and press representatives. Among the officials are Messrs W. Baird (president of the Southland Rugby Union), R. T. Meredith (a pas president and member of the executive), A. Mitchell (selector), A. J. Hamilton (secretary), J. Millar (Western Districts Sub-Union), N. R. Brown, and J. Oughton (members of the executive). The team will go to the North Island next week, where matches will be played against Wellington, Wairarapa, and Hawke's Bay. McKay and Metcalfe will not make the northern trip.

ACCOMMODATION AT LANCASTER PARK

additional seating ■ The question of providing seating j accommodation at Lancaster Park for the big crowd which it is anticipated; will attend the Ranfurly Shield match to-morrow, was discussed at the meeting of the Lancaster Park Board of Control last night. Mr J. K. Moloney said that there would be a big crowd, and if possible they should increase the seating accommodation. He expected that all the accommodation would be occupied by 12.30. It would be a great help if the board could provide extra boxes. The chairman (Mr W. H. Winsor) said that four rows of seats inside the oval would provide seating for 3000. He suggested that the 600 ft of 10 x 2 timber "to be used for the terraces to be constructed round the embankment could be placed on boxes, and thus provide additional seating. Mr I!. Beattie questioned whether there would be such a demand for seating accommodation, as the tendency was for the public to go on the bank. Mr H. H. "VVauchop asked if the board was providing ushers to pack the crowd. Mr Moloney: Do you think that the necessity will arise on the terrace? Mr C. S. Thompson: The crowd will pack itself. The chairman asked the secretary 'Mr J. C>. McGillivray) if it were possible to get more boxes. Mr McGillivray said that small fruit cases could be got. The chairman said that arrangements would be made if the boxes could be obtained, to use the timber, as he had ; suggested. MATCH TO BE BROADCAST STATEMENT by rugby union ! . j A description of the match to- [ morrow for the Ranfurly Shield between Southland and Canterbury will be broadcast, an announcement to that effect having been made last evening. The decision applies to the remainder of the matches under the control of the Canterbury Rugby Union to be played in Christchurch this season. On behalf of the union, the president, Mr A. E. McPhail, made the following statement last night:— "The Canterbury Rugby Union appointed' a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs A. E. McPhail (president), J. K. Moloney, and the secretary (Mr J. O. McGillivray), to bring down a memorandum setting forth the views of the union on the subject of broadcasting matches. The memorandum is as follows:

"Concerning the broadcasting of the match, Southland v. Canterbury, the Broadcasting Board has now concluded negotiations satisfactory to the Canterbury Rugby Union for the broadcast oi' the remaining matches of the season in Christchurch, for a fee of £SO. "The union, in conformity with its previous desire in respect of any revenue accruing from this source, has deciced to hand over to local charities the full amount received. j "It has been the considered opinion! of the union that any privilege granted to the Broadcasting Board in respect of football matches should be paid for by the board it is the board's duty to provide its patrons with entertainment." TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS In view of the anticipated large influx of visitors to witness the Ranfurly Shield match to-morrow the chief trafiic inspector for the Christchurch City Council (Mr H. Macintosh) states that motorists and others attending with vehicles approaching Lancaster Park from Ferry road, or roads to the north of the ground, are asked to do so by way of Lancaster street, where they will be directed by traffic inspectors where to park. Parking of cars in Ferry road, near the Lancaster Park Hotel and Wilson's road, is prohibited. Those who wish to park in the Lancaster Park special parking ground are to approach it by way of Falsgruve and Stevens streets. HIGH SCHOOLS' TOURNEY FIRST MATCHES TO-DAY The annual tournament for the Rugby fifteens of the Southland, Otago, Timaru, and Christchurch Boys' High Schools will open at the Show Grounds this afternoon. This tourney has in past years produced the best secondary school displays to be seen in the South Island, and the matches in this series should be of a quality to maintain the reputation. At 1.30 p.m. Southland will play Timaru. Otago and Christchurch will meet at 3 p.m. The referees will be Messrs A- Thompson and E. A. EmpSOII. On Monday the losing teams meet in the first game and the winning teams in the second. ENTERTAINING THE VISITORS The teams from the Southland, Otago, j and Timaru Boys' High Schools which will play in the high schools' tournament beginning this afternoon, arrived from the south last evening and were met by the headmaster of the Christchurch Boys' High School (Mr G. J. Lancaster). They are being billeted in the homes of pupils of the Christchurch High School and with old boys of their own schools. A detailed programme of entertainment has been arranged for the boys during their stay in Christchurch. The first two matches, those between Southland and Timaru and between Otago and Christchurch, will be played at the Show Grounds this afternoon, and in the evening the members of. all four teams will attend a dinner, beginning at 6.20, at the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association's tea rooms. To-morrow morning the boys will meet in Cranmer square at 9.30 and will be driven over Dyer's Pass to Governor's Bay, and from there round to Lyttelton and over to Sumner. In the afternoon they will be the guests of the Canterbury Rugby Union at Lancaster Park to see the match between Canterbury and Southland,- while in the evening a dance will be held for them at Frascati. A special service will be held in the Cathedral on Sunday morning, which will be attended by the members of the four teams. It will be conducted by Dean J. A. Julius. The boys will have the rest of the day to themselves, and on Monday afternoon the two matches between the winners and losers of to-day's games will be played. The visitors will leave for the south again on Tuesday morning. TRIANGULAR TOURNAMENT » (I'ItESS ASSOCIATION TS QSBF.AM.) WELLINGTON, August 17.
