HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES.

FIXING ALLOCATION

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. A conference of local bodies on the allocation of heavy traffic fees will be called about the beginning of August, and Crs. J. W. Beanland, M. E. Lyons, and J. K. Archer will attend it as the Christchurch City Council's representatives. The finance committee reported to the council last night that the period agreed upon for the distribution of heavy traffic fees having expired, a letter had been sent to each of the local bodies concerned asking if it was agreeable to a renewal of the arrangement for a further period oj three years. The number of local bodies circulated was 23, 16 agreed to the proposal, five asked for a further conference, and two did not reply. The Previous Basis. As the arrangement had to be unanimously accepted, the committee said it would be necessary to fix a date for a conference and to appoint three delegates to act on behalf of the council. The former arrangement provided for the council deducting 5 per cent, from the total fees collected and then taking 50 per cent, of the balance. The remainder was divided amongst the other local bodies on a basis of their expenditure on maintenance of roads over a period of three years. The report was adopted and the council's representatives were selected.
