Eleven Wellington dancing teachers have already interested themselves in this movement for the estalv lishment of a national ballet, which has, too, the support _of musicians, artists, professors, and literary people in the capital. Mibs Sadlier, daughter of the Bishop of Nelson, who is acting as relieving nurse for three years, was at Yezd, where the hospital had to be underground in summer on account of the fierce heat, says the "Church Mews"; they have to close down completely for two months. This city was designed by Alexander the Great as a prison for his enemies, as it is surrounded by 40 odd miles of waterless and roadless desert. The hospital cannot afford the high lowers which wealthy residents build to escape the ground heat.

Miss Era Young, matron ol the Ttoss Home, Dunedin, -who is at present in England, will be the official delegate of the Trained Nurses' Association of New Zealand at the International Conference of Nurses, which is to be held in Paris and Brussels in May of this year. Miss Young is Dominion president of the Association, and is also president of the Dunedin branch. _ The Nurses' Association in each province will contribute a certain sum towards the expenses incurred by Miss Young as delegate. CONTRACT BRIDGE TOURNAMENT. A "duplicate" contract bridge tournament, arranged by Mr R. de B. Ashworth, was held at the Jcllicoo Hall on Saturday evening. The guests wero received by Major R. F- W. Ashworth, Mrs Ashworth, and Miss Jean Ashworth. Mrs Ashworth wore a becoming frock of navy ninon patterned in floral design, with a smull shoulder cape, and Miss Ashworth's sleeveless frock was of white Nottingshire net mounted on pink satin, outlined at the nec-k and arms with seed pearlSj the waistline being defined with a silver girdle. Fourteen tables were arranged, the system in this type of tournament being that the same previously prepared hands are played by all the players making up each table. The results obtained bv those in the north and south and east and west positions, respectively, are then compared in order to ascertain which two players obtain the best results. Tlie winners were:— North and south, Mrs A. McDowell and Mrs C. Ring (equal), with Mrs P. Wfison and Miss Gnrrick; east and west, Dr. A'Court and Mr McDcrmont 1, with Miss G. Browne and Miss E. Fleetwood as runners-up. In a short address, Mr Ashworth said that this was the first opportunity Christchurch players had been given to play contract bridge as it was played in America, and he hoped similar parties would be organised in order thnt a team might be selected to compete against contract bridge players in Wellington and other centres in New Zealand.

Conveners and assistants were appointed for the various stalls, and ttie fathers' committee was asked to take charge of tlie side shows. A social will also be held in the evening. At the conclusion of tlie general committee meeting, at which Mrs Williamson presided in the absence of Mrs Hamlin, Mr Simpson, on behalf of the fathers, presentecl the sand pit to thecommittee. The pit had been tilled with new s.md and finished with a concrete kerbing by members of the fathers' committee. OBITUARY.

Mrs r. m. pemberton. The death lias occurred at Mata- ' mat a of Mrs Leila Catherine Pemberton, at tho age of 67. Mrs Pemberton, who was the daughter of the late Mr Hamilton Moore, was born in the Rangitikei district. She. married Mr Robert M. Pemberton, a civil engineer, and lived at Waikaai, North Canterbury. After her husband's death in 1894she lived in Palinerston North, later farming in the Ashhurst and Tirau districts. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs G. \Y. Seton (Tirau) and Mrs N. FitssHerbert, Putaruru, a.nd fiix grandchildren. PARTY AT TEMPLETON. A pleasant dance was given in the Teir.pieton Lodge Hall to celebrate the coming of age of Mr George Taylor, son of Mrs Mclnnes. The dance was given by Mr and Mrs Mclnnes, and there was a large attendance of relatives and guests. During the evening tho toast of the guest of honour was proposed by Mr W. Taylor and responded to by Mr George Taylor. Music for dancing was played by Broadway's Orchestra, and the novelty dances were won as follows: Lucky spot, Mr 0-J. Taylor and Miss M.
