SCHOOL OF ART.
EXHIBITION OF STURENTS* « WORK. ; \ |_.!f
The annual exhibition of .thfe-work of the students of the. Canterbury College . School of Art, at present on" the school, illustrates at the same'tijne the wide variety of arts and eraf ta taught at the sehool and the high standard of achievement of the students. In all branches of the work, from.thaVof the . various classes devoted .to vote- art, to that of those which'Me more"strictly vocational,, there is evidence elf "sound • technical training' as *~we\F'i£~ltt\ the originality without "wfiicTTC the" training - would be of little worth. The exhibition, which has been open for a : week, and has been attended by a large num- ■ ber of people, closes this evening.' In the main room, beside the- metalwork and the 'modelling sections, both, . of which contain work that - ■could = scarcply be bettered in- any other.similar institution, there art examples of the work of students in oil colour painting. Here? atill lute and in landscape, the work --«*? view . shows technical command of "the medium employed, and an artistic vision .-wnieh' finds sufficient in a set subject to rouse the interest of the observer. Among the landscapes some sketches- -of the new hospital buildings'are outstanding, while one or two of- the still life-paint-ings would stand well besi&e-the work of much more experienced artists; Even the work of junior pupils is interesting. Much the same general ability is shown in the drawing from the antique, * and the time studies in the life room, some of the drawings being fine examples of good draughtsmanship; and displaying a sense both of plastic form and of outline. The other sections, graphic arts, poster work, design, architectural drawing, illuminating • and lettering, and needlecraft, have been referred to in an earlier review.
