MINING.

. GOLCONDA G.M. COMPANY. During the week ending -December 10th, tho following work has been carried out: — South End—The crosscut was advanced 10ft, total 70ft. The country rock is of the best description, but is rather on the firm side, and is interlaced with mineral seams. North End —The crosscut thruu«h the break was advanced Oft, total 77ft. The men were in ribs of quarts; and quartz stringers until the last 411. Since then we havo been in strong quartz, which showed a few colours or gold. This is apparently the reef wo worked on at the 70ft level, as itshows traces of cinnabar. We have not yet reached the hanging wall of the reef, and by its appearance there will bo a fairly large body of ore. Tho quartz is very heavily mineralised, and one rib about a little zinc blende. The better values should be on the banging wall portion of the reef. MOUNT DAVID SLUICING COMPANY. ITHT; PRESS Special Scrvac.l DUNEDIN, December 16. The secretary of the Mount David Sluicing Oo M TAd., reports that there was some exceptionally rough weather on the coast last week-end, and this is responsible for a message from tne manager that there will be no wasnup this week owing to a slip in the race. CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN FIELD. ' (Received December loth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 14. The New Goldfields of Australia Exploration Company has been registered with a capital of £35,000. It will operate in Central Australia. GOLDEN DAWN GOLD MINES, LTD. Messrs Laumnson and Lewis have been advised that in the new leading stopo above No. 3 level on No. 3 reef the stone continues to be of a much milder nature, being much easier to break and tho values havo improved. To test the latter 35 tons were put tbrough from this point, tho battery head assays being £4 7s 8d per ton (standard values). The reef for over 60 feet averages live feet iu width.

A WEST COAST FIELD. It ii reported that a party who have beon prospecting in Taipo (Jackson's) district have discovered several leaders carrying gold near the junction or Julia creek with Taipo river. The quartz, it is stated, is a heavy massive sulphide ore, with slaty intrusions, and the leader carrying visible gold lias been subjected to assay, showing its content to include four dtinces seven pennyweights of silver to the ton. Tin's is tho report of the Mines Department on the samples. There are leaders running into Julia creek, and the party have begun a drive across the leaders in order to test the visible prospects, this drive being one calculated to cut the main reef in a southerly direction. Tho best assay is from a sixinch leader, the next ones being two and a half inches in width and one of them assaying 2dwts 7grs of gold and 7dwts of silver to the ton. All of the loaders tested ehow a little gold. Tho party discovered another quartz outcrop further down tho valley, averaging 6ft in width. The Taipo Valley has been worked with considerable success bv individual miners for many years. The re-work-ing of the riverbed has paid well after periods of heavy floods. This would seem to indicate the existence of a good reef somewhere in the hinterland, but prospectors have not yet been able to locite it. A Christohurch party arranged about two years ago witn an "Bngfish mining expert to visit the valley to report on tho alluvial prospects, but his inspection convinced him that the cost of Imring (about £10,000) on account of the boulders would bo too heavy to justify him recommending the- project to his principals. The prospects otherwise were favourable.

OBJECTION TO PROSPECTING LICENSE. (IMIESS ASSOCIATION TBtEOBAM ) AUCKLAND, Docember 15. The Takapuna Borough Council decided to object to an application for a prospecting license in respect of a claim staked out on St. Leonard's beach, Takapuna, recently by three men who claimed to have discovered traces of gold in the sand. The Mayor said: "The Council should object, as it has been advised by its solicitors that the prospectors will "have the right to dig up the beach and excavate hotes, and, possibly, spoil the locality, if the license is granted. We must watch the borough's interests. That does not mean that we intend to put a stop to tho activities of the men. They won't give any information. One man came into tho Council office and wanted a free hand." HARBOUR BOARD LOAN. APPLICATIONS SATISFACTORY. • The applications for debentures in the Lyttelton Harbour Board's redemption loan of £136,000 are coming in satisfactorily, Mr C. H. C'ibborn, secretary of the Board told a representative of The Press yesterday. Provided that they continue to come in as they have been doing during tho past week or two he thought that it would lie possible to announce the closing of the list before Christmas.
