ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. The Canterbury Athletic Centre o£ the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association met last evening. Present-—Messrs J. K. Moloney (in the chair), K. "Beattie, L. H. Hill, E. Todd, J. A. Gasson, W„ J. Calderwood,.and Dr. A. L. Haslam. The Marshland Sports Club -was granted February 18th as the date of its onnnal meeting, and its delegate to the Centre (Mr W. "Waugh) was approved. The Bangiora Returned Soldiers' Amateur Athletic Club was granted Easter Saturday for its meeting. The programme of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society for its sports on January 2nd was approved. The Kaiapoi Amateur and Cycling Club was granted affiliation. Mr Beattie reported for the Cycling Centre that it had decided to approve the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club's application for affiliation, and the New Zealand Council had advised by telegram that' this had been granted. The Papanui Club members were now entitled . to ride in races conducted under the jurisdiction of the Centre. It was decided that Mr P. H. Stubberfleld be invited to judg« the inter-club walking races in the New Tear-. The Wellington Centre wrote advising that it was in complete agreement with the idea of a meeting with the two visiting Canterbury teams on January 21st. Messrs Moloney and Beattie were appointed a sub-committee to go ahead with the necessary arrangements. Answering a question about the activities of tha committee set up to devise means for the encouraging of women's, athletics, Mr Hill said that a few promising runners had been found, but difficulty was being encountered in getting equipment. A setback had been received when the Girls' Association cricket competition had started. On the motion of Mr Gasson it was decided that the 100 yards women'* race be divided into A and B grades. It was also decided that women's relay races be included in the programmes for the evening meetings. SYDENHAM CLUB. The Sydenham Club held two scratch races at Lancaster Park last evening.
