CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association met last evening. There were present: —Messrs W. L. King (in the chair), W. Simpson, C. E. Evans, G. H. Robertson, G. B. A. Billcliff, S. G. Lester, M. C. Ward, E. H. North, C. S. Thompson, W. J. V. Hamilton, C. H. Ayling, and E. E. Luttrell (secretary). Messrs Ayling A. S. Jacobs, and A. Jones were appointed a selection committee for the Brabin Shield match against Wellington juniors. The Wellington Association advised that owing to the fact that its Brabin Shield team would not return from its northern, tour until after the New Year, consideration of dates for the match with Canterbury would have to bo deferred. , The West Coast Association wrote asking that the touring Canterbury eleven play a match at Greymouth on Christmas Bay. On the motion of Mr Thompson it was decided that the West Coast Association bo informed that tho Canterbury Association would not countenance the playing of organised cricket under its jurisdiction on a Sunday. Mr M. C. Ward was appointed manage r of the team for tho West Coast tour. It was decided to writo to the Canterbury Umpires' Association suggesting that umpires for representative and club matches should go on to the field at the commencement and at all adjournments in uny game, five minutes before the actual starting time. At present umpires took the field punctually at the starting time, but generally lost some time in getting play started. With one dissentient, Mr Thompson, who asked that his vote bo recorded against the motion, it was decided that the Association provide two bats and two pairs of pads for the use of players in representative practices and matches. Mr King, who brought the matter to the notice of the committee, said the clubs who supplied material for their players taking part in representative practices and matches complained of the damage suffered by their equipment. Hawke's Bay Match. It was reported that tho cost of the Hawke's Bay match to tho Canterbury Association was approximately £3O. The collections, taken up at Hagley Park had totalled £l3 17s. A motion of thanks to tho Hagley Park Grounds Committee for tho use oi the wicket and for permission to make a collection was passed. "It was an interesting game, and of considerable value as a try-out for our representative players," remark'ed the chairman. A letter was received from the West Coast Association expressing thanks for the manner in which O. Morris, the Coast representative in the Canterbury team against Hawke's Bay, was entertained while in Christchurch. A hope was expressed that tho selectors were satisfied with his showing. Whether or not he gained a place in the Plunket Shield teams, the action of tho Canterbury Association would help to popularise cricket on the West Coast. Broadcasting of Shield Matches. A request for permission to broadcast fifteen-minute resumes each hour of play in tho Plunket Shield matched against Auckland and Wellington, together with running descriptions of interesting portions of tho play, was received from the Now Zealand Broadcasting Board. The letter added that the Board would be pleased to co-oper-ate with tho Association in announcing such items concerning the matches as were of public interest. Tho chairman remarked that he did not see why tho Board should be given these facilities for nothing. Tho Association had news to sell, and if the Board would not pay for tho privileges it was' a question of whether broadcasting of the matches should be permitted. Mr Lester: It is a good advertisement for tho match. The chairman moved that permission be granted to the Board to broadcaat the two matches for a fee of £B, this sum to be given to charity. There -was no seconder, and Mr Thompson's motion that permission for the broadcast, as requested, be granted, subject to the chairman and secretary making suitable arrangements with the Board, was carried. Mr Thompson pointed out that the broadcasts would result in increased interest in the matches, as all listeners would be kept in touch with the game. Messrs King, Thompson, and Luttrell were appointed a sub-committee to make final arrangements for the Plunket Shield matches. Admission charges for the Plunket Shield games were fixed at 2s and Is, including tax, children half-price. Passes for the Unemployed. Mr Thompson suggested that it would be a gesturo of kindliness at this time of the year for the Association to grant a number of free passes—at least 100 —to the unemployed for each of the two Plunket Shield matches to be played in Christchurch at Christmas and the New Year. He said that many who were interested in the games would be unable to attend them because of unfortunate circumstances. Mr Lester pointed out that a hundred passes would not go very far amongst the many unemployed in the City. He suggested that a greater number be issued. * It was decided that 300 passes be issued to the unemployed for each match, and that Mr B, T. Bailey, Officer in Charge of the Labour Department, be asked to distribute tho (passes through the Labour offices. Women's Cricket at Hagley Oval. •"I consider it is making a farce of tho game to mix tho women's cricket up with our own senior games," declared the chairman, when the suggestion was made that the No. 1 wicket at Hagley Park, which will be vacant next Saturday owing to the Hawke's Bay match having been played there on the first day of tho current round of grade matches, bo given up to a match played by tho leading teams in the Women's Cricket Association. "What else are you going to put on this wicket?" asked a member. Mr King said that while he was thoroughly in sympathy with women's cricket, and had coached the first women's representative team, he could not agree with the principle of mixing their games with the Association's own senior grade matches. It was decided, by eight votes to three, to invite the Women's Cricket Association to play their most important match next Saturday on the No. 1 wicket at Hagley Park. Report of-Bowling Coach. 'Die report of the Association's bowling ' coach, A. W. Thomas, on the results of his first three months engagement under tho coaching scheme, was submitted and received. The report stated:— "There appears to be a distinct improvement in bowling at the nets. Length and direction have been given particular attention, with a result that both batsmen and bowlers are benefiting. At least twelve bowlers aro showing great promise, and after Christmas I propose to take certain selected bowlers and give them practice against first grade batsmen. I may be able to arrange for these bowlers to practise against bateinen who are »ot members

of their particular clubs, so as to give diversity of practice to bowlers and batsmen. I find that players are still keenly interested and seldom miss a practice. As instructed, I have been giving two nights a week to the representative players, and I believe that this will produce good results. The coaching amongst the boys is proceeding satisfaetoriiy and the interest taken by the boys being coached is all that could .be desired." The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that at a meeting of delegates the advisability of. taking steps to improve the bowling in the various centres was reaflirmed. It was decided to ask the various Associations to. advise of any useful or novel features in their coaching schemes, in order that all might benefit. It was decided that a copy of the report of the coach should bo sent to the New Zealand Council. T. C. LOWRY WILL PAY IF REQURED. (PRBcIS ASSOCIATIOK TltCti&xU.) WELLINGTON, December 13.
