CRICKET.

A HEAVY DEFEAT. OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL MAKES POOR SCORES. Facing the formidable total of 567 runs for two wickets put up by the College team when it declared at stumps on Monday, Otago Boys' High School went in to bat yesterday morning for their first innings in the annual cricket match with Christ's College. The wicket was faster than on tho previous day, and presented fairly easy prospects, to the visitors. The Otago team, however, wore comparatively young ami inexperienced, and the variety of tho College bowling proved altogether too strong. In spite of some attractive batting by G. H. Mills and A. C. Graham the whole side were dismissed m 80 minutes for tho small total of 69. After an unpromising start the College bowling became deadly. While without their fast bowler, who was suffering from a split finger received earlier in the week, College were nevertheless able to produce strong and varied bowling, T. A. Harpur, with four for 13, and W. J. Byrne, with three for 7, being outstanding. B. E. Alexander, although he took only one wicket, was useful in keeping the runs down, and delivered slow, tricky balls that puzzled the batsmen considerably. Good work by A. A. Roberts bohind tho wickets dismissed three of tho visitors. Promising Start. The opening pair, Mills and Graham, started in bright fashion by scoring 15 off Fenwick's first and only over—mainly using glides to fine leg. The rapid scoring was stopped when Harpur took over, bowling two maidens in his first four overs and troubling the opposition with his length. Harpur, who is a left-hander, swings and breaks back dangerously, and after 20 minutes of play he took Mills's wicket, when the score stood at one for 37. His next ball scattered Corbet's bails and a few minutes later Graham, who had been batting well to make tho highest score of the innings, went the same way for 29. O. R. Payne was then bowled by Alexander before another run had been added, and almost immediately afterwards Fenwick, at mid-off, snapped up a low catch hit by R. J. Coupland off Harpur. Otago's efforts to stem tho rot that now set in were vain. R. G. Mahoney made 6 before being caught and bowled by W. J. Byrne, a young player of some promise. L. J. Ramsay had failed to score at all when Burbury ended his strike to make the score 67 for seven. Farrell knocked up a useful 10, only to bo held by Roberts behind tho wickets. Edwards, Ramsay, and Thompson wero dismissed for "ducks," the last-named two being stumped by Roberts, and Jarmnn. though he carried his bat off, had done nothing with it. Improvement Shown, When play was resumed after lunch, tho visitors were facing, tho unpleasantly largo deficit of 49b on beginning their second innings. Nevertheless they laced the bowling piuckUy, the diminutive Mills in particular playing eome first-class strokes. Harpur just iuiled to tako a difficult catch in the iund over, and when the score stood at 7 Fenwick dropped ono from Graham Tho College fielding was rather carelcsa in the second innings. Threo or lour easy catches vvcro dropped, Scott's- bowling suffering as a coiuequcncc, though he himself held two difficult balls knocked off Byrne. Appealing was also indulged in to an unnecessary extent by tho College team. Tho first wicket fell at 32, when Graham wont Ibw off Alexander, who thnn bowled Corbet after ho had hit one four. After 40 minutes' play there were 4G runs on tho board, and Otago, though by no means at ease, were batting w'ith more confidence than in the socond innings. Mills,' the only man to make any aggressive reply to the bowling, was responsible for tho stand. When ho was finally caught by Scott, he had played a careful innings for 83, including three fours and four twos, and brought the score up to 74 for four. wickets. Tho century was' reached after J)0 minutes, but Mahoney was caught by Roberts shortly afterwards, making the tea adjournment score 118 for five. For a time it appoarod as if Otago might hold out until stumps and make a draw of the game, but these hopes were dispelled when Harpur cleanbowled Farrcll and later ran Edwards out with a smart return to the wicketkeeper. But tho score slowly mounted with well-judged hitting by Coupland, until, with his score at 28, he stepped in the way of ono of Horpur's balls and did not survive the appeal. The High School tail did not last very long, and Otago, defeated by an innings and 368 runs, were all out by 4.30 p.m., having compiled 130 runs in the same number of minutes.
