PERSONAL. (.SPECIAL TO THE PEESS.) GBEYMOUTH, December 13. Miss E. Moore, infant mistress at the Grey Main School, leaves on Thursday for Sydney on her holidays. Miss Marjorie Kirk, "who arrived recently from Melbourne on a tour of New Zealand, is visiting Greymouth. Mr W. McKechnie has arrived from Dunedin on. a visit to his parents in Greymouth. Mrs L. McCormick and Misses M. and K. McCorniiek (Dunedin) are visiting friends in Greymouth. Mr J. Saunders left to-day on a visit to Wellington. Obituary. The death took place at the Keefton Hospital on Saturday of Mr Thomas Sexton, aged 77 years. Mr Sexton, who was a very old resident of Westland, was a native of Australia. He was found in a roadman's hut at Maruia seriously ill, and was brought by tho police to the Reefton Hospital. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Greymouth Magistrate's Court yesterday was presided over by Mr W. Meldrum, S.M. Appearing on remand Desmond Ivan Perrin, 25, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft at New Plymouth of a clarinet valued at £3 10s, the property of Lawrence Broadway Davis. Mentioning that defendant had already spent fourteen days in gaol, being unable to obtain bail, the Magistrate inflicted a fine of £1 and ordered a refund of 6s paid to defendant by the second-hand dealer who had bought the clarinet from him, an order being made for the roturn of the instrument to the lawful owner. John Darwell, licensee of the Union Hotel, Greymouth, pleaded guilty to unlawfully selling liquor after hours. He was fined £5 with costs 10s. For being a person other than the licensee of tho Union Hotel, and unlawfully supplying liquor after hours, Joseph Patrick Low was convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs. . The Magistrate gave his reserved decision in the case heard last Monday, in which Joseph Ferguson was charged with permitting eight cows to wander on the Knmara road, and rescuing them when they had been seized for impound- | ing purposes. The Magistrate held that the evidence had satisfied him that the cattle were on the road on their way to be milked, and no one had any right to seize them for impounding, and dismissed the informations. Cold Weather. Cold weather was experienced in the Eeefton district on Saturday, when the Paparoa and Victoria ranges were heayily coated with snow. The hills in the Maruia district were also coated with snow. Snow fell at Big River on Saturday, and also at the Alexander mine. School Clinic. -' During the summer vacation the Greymouth Dental Clinic at the Main School is to. be extended. The clinic, having two nurses, eaters for the requirements of the scholars requiring dental attention from the Main, Blaketown, Cobden, Marist, and Convent Schools. Learn to Swim Week. A learn to swim week for the benefit of scholars of primary schools in. the Grey district is to be held at, the Grey- [ mouth Municipal Baths shortly after [ the schools resume in February nest. i The Greymouth Swimming Centre will provide the necessary instructors. The decision to hold the swimming week was the outcome of a meeting of delegates to consider the question. Tlie Mines. Coal mines in the district expect to work fairly regularly up to Christmas from now. Wallsend and Blackball will probably get in the full number of shifts, and for this week the James State mine will work full time and the Liverpool State for four days. To-day the Dobson mine was the only mine idle, but it will work later in the week. Pootballer Hurt. While cleaning a window at his home in Hokitika, Mr Henry Staines, the wellknown footballer, received serious injuries. The ladder on which he was standing slipped, and in trying to save himself he put out his hand, which went through the window. The weight of his body dragging him away caused the broken glass of the window to cut the left arm badly. The artery was severed and also the muscles and tendons. He was taken to the Westland Hospital. Teacher Entertained. Mr James Nevin, who has been assistant master at the Hokitika District High School for the past three years, and is retiring from the teaching profession, was met by the members of the Westland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute on Saturday, and presented with two reference volumes. Mr T. Kelly made the presentation, and eulogised the manner in which Mr Niven had carried out his dutios while on the staff of the Hokitika School. The Eector, Mr J. L. Menzies, also spoke. Lorry Over Bank. While tipping rubbish over the cliff near the Blackball Coal Company's bins, the company's lorry in charge of Harry Davies backed over the cliff and was badly damaged. When backing in, the lorry went over the top of a log which was placed as a "stop" at the edge of the cliff. The driver escaped injury.
