OAT BREEDING.
work at Lincoln COM-EGE. THREE YIELD TRIALS. The oat breeding experiments carried out at Lincoln College are detailed in. the report of the research work during tho winter, which was issued at yesterday's meeting of the College Board. •'Oat breeding," says the report, "Las reached a further stage, in that 3-ic-Ld trials are being conducted with the best families from both tho Algerian X Dun and the Algerian X Garton crosses. Three groups of yield trials involving the 1233 hand-sown, rod rowplots have been sown. These aro as fellows:— Autumn-sown variety trial: In a similar trial last season, Black Scotch outyielded alt other varieties, beating Algerians by 11 bushels an acre, Duns by 29 bushels an acre (see March, 1932, report). Owing to the very unfavourable conditions prevailing during the latter part of the growing season, the variety viold trial is being repeated this year. Algerians, Dun cross: The families of this cross did not withstand the dry season very well. All are very similar in type to the Dun parent, which yielded 18 bushels an acre less than Algerians. Twelve of the best families, yielding from two to eight bushels an acre more than Duns were kept after the harvest, but this number was reduced to live, after the grain was examined. These have been sown in yield trials with Algerian and Duns as controls. Algerians, Garton cross: One thousand and seventy-four families of this cross were grown last year. These Itave been reduced to about sixty families and sown in yield trials with Algerians and Gartons as controls.
