UNEMPLOYMENT.

j DISTRESS IN THE CITY. RELIEF ASSOCIATION'S THANKS TO HELPERS. ) Motions of appreciation and thanks ' to the many helpers and contributors during the past twelve months, particularly to the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), Mrs Sullivan, the assistant town clerk (Mr J. F. Eames), Major G. Dry, of the Salvation Army, and the staffs of the relief depots, were carried at the linal meeting for the year of the Christchurch Citizens' Relief Association yesterday. Thero were present: Mr George Harper (chairman), the Rt. Eov. Bishop Brodie, Mrs A. I. Fraer, the Revs. P. Eevell and F. A. Tooley, Messrs Walter Scarff, J. W. .Crampton, J. W. Woodbury (organiser), and V. French (secretary). In referring to the Mayor's services for the relief of distress in the City, the Bev. P. Eevell said that the Mayor had devoted a great amount of time to the task, which had been one of the greatest worries of his term of office. Ho was to bo congratulated upon the fact that under his leadership so much had been dono and such large sums of money raised. Appreciative reference was also made bv Mr Scarff to Cr. John W. Beanland's scheme for the placing of unemployed men on the pay sheets of local bodies. "Cr. Beanland"devoted a great deal of time to the problem and is to be congratulated," said Mr S-carff, who said that the scheme would greatly help the central relief depot at a difficult time. The chairman announced that since the previous meeting the Association had become an incorporated body. There would be no change in the work of the Association, but the change would give it added power and a better status. He suggested that a small committee bo appointed to frame by-laws for tho Association, which would facilitate its working next year. "It looks at the present time as though there will be oven more work next year than we have had in the past," he added. A motion of appreciation of tho services of Mr Harper in arranging tho ,incorporation of tho Association was passed, and a committee consisting of Messrs Harper, Woodbury, and French was appointed to draft by-laws. The director's report stated that tho gift scheme in the schools had not brought in as much as usual during the last few weeks. Schools that had contributed were St. Alban«. Richmond. Bromley, and Normal. Gifts received at stores and over the counters at the depots had been of a satisfactory amount. Most of the food issued to the depots, however, had had to be purchased at a cost of about £l2O a week. Seeing that the whole of tho Association's funds would be expended after this week Mr Harper and tho director had waited upon the Mayor who, after the position had been explained to him, gave instructions for tho sum of £242 to be paid over to the Association at -once. This would give Ihe Association a new lease of life. Families assisted during the week ! ended December 3rd totalled 2051, and for the week ended December 10th 2000. ! during the fortnight. The bank balj ance was £l2O 10s fid. i i VEGETABLE GROWING. AUCKLAND RELIEF WORKERS. A GO-SLOW POLICY ALLEGED. (rRBSS A.SSOCIATIOX T»LS'3BAU.) AUCKLAND, December 13. The assertion that a "go slow" policy is being followed by members" of the fifty-three branches of the Auckland Provincial Unemployed Workers' Association was made to-day by the Association's president (Mr F. Lark). He said the policy was decided on a week ago at a meeting of the national executive of the unemployed. Following tho 10 per cent, cut in relief pay the men decided that rather than let their wives and families feel the operation of the cut, which last week amounted to four shillings off the wages of married men, they would go short and work according to their strength. Hence the "go slow" policy. The men could only work in proportion to the amount of food they got. Enquiries of local bodies failed to establish that the policy is fully operative, although last night the relief workers of a suburban Town Board officially notified the Board that they intended to adopt the policy until sustenance was granted and the recent cut restored. MEN MUST TAKE WORK ALLOTTED TO THEM. (PRSSS 4.SSOCIATIOK TKLEGRAMS ) WELLINGTON, December 13. At a meeting of the Johnsonville Town Board, on -the motion of the chairman, it was decided to empower the chairman of the Works Committee to refuse work to men who turn down the labour allotted to them. The *motion arose from a report that a certain section of the unemployed relief workers would refuse to work in their own trades. It was stated that a little skilled trade work is required to keep relief workers in labour, and that the Board is unable to pay award rates for the skilled workmen.
