+. KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting "* tho Kaiapoi Borough Council was held lost night. Present: The Mayor (the Rev. W. If. A. Vickory), Crs. A. K. Brown, C. M. Williams, M. Romany, F. Thome, J. W. Barnard, H. Bmaldi, A. Linklater, J. D. Williams, and R. JEunn. The secretary, Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association, wrote applying for the Council s sanction to extend the water supply to tiie north end of the reserve, the Association bnaring the cost of materials. Permission was Cr Tho (secretary, Kaiapoi Relief Committee, wrote thanking tho Council for its gi« of firewood for distribution to necessitous eases. The letter was received. The chairman, Main Highways Board, Wellington, wrote suggesting that local authorities arrange for surfacemen and graders to remain at work over the holiday period in order to protect the main highways during the holiday traffic. The letter was received. The acting-town clerk, Petono Borough Council. wrote with reference to the proposed new legislation contained in Section 141, Clauses 2 and 8, of the Municipal Corporations Bill, 1932, whereby a Commission would have power to force amalgamation -Vith another borough. The Council solicited support in the contention that the clauses either bo eliminated or a proviso inserted whereby the Commission would have no jurisdiction in a cobo where an adverse rote was recorded at a poll, and suggesting that the Council approach the member for the district on the matter. Tho letter was received and it was decided to write to tho member for the district on the matter. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr H. Mcintosh, a former Mayor and Councillor of the borough, in the death of his mother. With reference to tho sinking of an additional well at Kairaki, Or. Ramsay gave notice of motion that the Council's previous resolution to pay half the cost be rescinded. The opening of tenders for the paving of Charles street was deferred until the Council had inspected the paved roads in the Heathcote county. The financial statement showed receipts to bo £240 12s, tho debit bank balance £1642 6s 9d, and accounts passed for payment £248 lis Id.
