Simes, of Christchurch, has returned from a trip abroad, and is staying at tho Royal Hotel. Messrs J. Metzger (Dunedin) nnd J. Crawford (Invercargill) are staying at tho Clarendon Hotel. Messrs C. E. Anderson, .T. B. Bowen, and A. L. Manson (Wellington), and Mark Slade (Cave) are staying at the &cw City Hotel. Messrs O. E. Hermes (Sydney), R. T. Gray, J. W. Higgins (Wellington), and L. D. Hudson (DunMr E. A. Bishop, who has been in the service of the Christchurch branch of tho National Bank of New Zealand for 40 years, will retire next month. Mr Bishop is nt present head of the bills department of the bank. Mr John Fuller, of Sydney, a director of Fullers' Theatres, Ltd., arrived yesterday evening from Dunedin, and intends staying in Christchurch till Tuesday, when he leaves for Wellington.
A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr E. Douglas Tayler, F.R.C.0., A.R.C.M., late Supervisor of School Music under the Education Department, was passed at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. Mr A. H. Hansen, chairman of the Tamaki (Dannevirke) Dairy Company, in response to suppliers representing 20 factories, is being nominated to oppose Mr W. A. lorns, chairman of the Dairy Control Board, as representative of the No. 6 Ward.'—Press Association. Mr W. E. Culbert, chief superintendent in the South Island for the Colonial Mutual Lite Assurance Society, who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to Dunedin. Mr E. V. Gilberd, of Wanganui, who has been appointed district, superintendent in Cliristchurch, has commenced liis duties. Mr G. F. Yerex, inspector under the Animals Protection and Game Act, is arr ive in Christchurch from Y\ olhngton to-morrow, and intends leaving the same evening for Dunedin. Mr Yerex is dealing with matters connected with the Government's scheme for the payment of bonus on deerskins. Mr G. Benstead was appointed by the Canterbury Education Board at its meeting yesterday to bo its representative on tho Timaru High Schools Board. Mr Benstead, who is a newlyelected member of the Education Board, was also appointed to fill the vacancy on tho management of the Timaru Technical School caused by the death of Mr J. G. Gow. Mr C. T. Aschman has been elected <Jx officio to the committee of the McLean Institute, representing the Canterbury College Board of Governors. He replaces the Hon. G. J. Smith, M.L.C. At yesterday's annua! meeting of the institute a vote of appreciation of Mr Smith's services was passed and a welcome was extended to Mr Aschman. Yesterday afternoon the staff and pupik of the Fendalton open-air school assembled to say good-bye to Mr Baas, who is leaving the school to take up a position in South Canterbury. The headimaster '(Mr A. R. Blank), in presenting Mr Baas with a watch on behalf of the teachers, spoke of his good work during the two years ho had been a member of tho staff, and referred warmly to liis constant readiness to do anything that was asked of him on behalf of tho school. The children of Standard IV., who have been in Mr Baas's charge during this year, presented him with a volume of "Sea Stories."
