KAIAPOI. The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club Bowling Club was held in the club rooms on Thursday evening, the president (Mr J. A. Mealines) presiding over a good attendance. The annual report, and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit balance or £1 6s and a balance of assets over liabilities of £2O 9s od, were adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr S. <l. Eichards; vice-pie-sidents: Messrs G. T. McNally and W. Sheppard; committee: Messrs J. A. Mealings, «T. C. Simpson, an<* Monk; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Anderson, auditor, Mr J. Ball; grocr. superintendent, Mr E. Monk; solo selector, Mr b. Monk; centre delegate, Mr W. Healey; handicapping and match committee: Messrs J. C. Simpson, J. A. Mealings, and E. Monk. It was decided to vote against a four-rink championship competition on Saturday afternoons, and support the same system of pennants as last year. Mr W. Healey, the dub's centre delegate, submitted a report on the work carried out by the centre during the past year. Votes, of thanks were accorded the retiring officers, the green superintendent, the centre delegate, the lady helpers, and Mr J. Drabble for their assistance to the Club during the season, and a motion of sympathy was passed with Mr E. Healey in his illness.

KAIKOURA. Mr T B. Strong (Director of Education) and Mr N. T. Lambourne (Inspector 1 ) arrived in Kaikoura on Thursday afternoon. In the evening they i were met by the members-of the Town School Committee, and.the question of the William Cooke bequest was discussed. It appears that the Public Trustee desired to know whether the terms of the will were being carried out m connexion with the Cooke scholarships The senior inspector of schools tor the Canterbury district had notified the Director that the Kaikoura School had not the teaching staff or the necessary eauipment required, and . recommended the transfer of scholars to the Kangiora High School or the Christchurch Technical College. The question was before the Education Board during the week, but Mr Strong had left before the meeting, and had not perused the school committee's reply. The letter was placed before Mr Strong, and on 1 riday he visited the school and plots. Before breaking-up for the second term holidays, the the Kaikoura Town School held an impromptu concert at the school on Thursday afternoon, when a most entertaining programme was given and thoroughly appreciated. The manner Jn which the items were rendered reflected credit on the pupils and those concerned with their waining. Mr and Mrs Archie Brown, of Grange road, left for Christchurch on Friday morning, en route to Wellington, where they will spend a holiday. A break-up dance was held at the Town School on Thursday night, when a pleasant time was spent in dancing, games, and competitions, these being won by Miss V. Johnston and Mr i. fc>. H Warner. ROTHERHAM. The annual meeting of tho Amuii Flower Show Committee .was held in the Public Hall, Rotherham, on Thursday afternoon, when Mr G. Reid (% icepresident) presided over a good attendance. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet were considered very satisfactory in view of the adverse season, and conditions experienced last Tho total receipts were £34 10s and the total expenditure £33 12s Id, caving a credit balance uf 17s lid. LEITHFIELD. On Wednesday quite a number of friends of Mrs Boyce called to congratulate her on her 91st birthday. In tho afternoon the members of her family assembled to celebrate tho occasion, and Mrs Boyce received many suitable gifts. Tho birthday cake, beautifully decorated in pink and white with 91 candles, was the gift of Mr and Mrs P. Maiden and family, who were also present. A fire b'oke out in a garage adjoining the bakehouse on the premises of Mr C. C. Reid on Wednesday night. A willing band of workers managed to keep tho flames from spreading to the bakehouse. The delivery van, flour, and confectionery wero destroyed.

ROLLESTON. Mrs Gallagher (Christchurch) is spending a week's holiday with Mrs Crawford (Rolleston). The Rolleston school children spent a very interesting day at the Winter Show last Wednesday, undjr tho charge of Mr Scott (chairman of the school committee) and Mr Burgess (a former chairman). Travelling and luncheon expenses were provided by tho committee. ISLINGTON. The W.E. A. -have started meetings at the Islington Hall, with tho permission of tho Welfare Committeo. At tho first meeting Mr J. McClinchy presided and spoke of tho good effects of education. There was an excellent attendance. Mr George Manning (seciotajy of tho Christchurch branch of the W.E.A.) addressed the meeting, telling members of tho aims and objects of tho organisation. Afterwards a most interesting lantern lecturo was given on India.

HORNBY. Uu Thursday evening at the Orange Hall, Hornby, a picture programme was given under the auspices of St. David's Presbyterian Church, in aid of church funds. Mr K. P. Lilly presided and thanked the large audience for their attendance- and Mr H. Milner for working the machine. Mr D. Laugeson and Mr J. McTavish (Hornby) left on Thursday tor holidays in the North Island.

WEST MELTON. Another social was held in the West Melton School on Friday evening, and was again attended by a large crowd. The competitions were won by the following :—Mrs C. L. Brown 1, Miss L. Watson 2; Mr A. McKay 1, and Mr W. Wilson 2. Music was supplied by Mrs W. Hayes, and extras were p.ayed by Misses h. Watson and E. PavelKa. The annual general meeting of ihe West Melton district Horticultural Society was held recently in the scnoolroom. There was a largo and representative attendance Mr A. E. The old girls were defeated by school by 3 goals to 1. Miss Baxter was the referee. Mrs S. Fairbane has returned to her home in Kirwee after spending a short holiday with Mrs N. Clinton (Templeton). Mrs W. Drayton and Miss Brown, who have been spending a holiday with relatives in Dunedin, have returned to Templeton. Mrs W. Brown, of Levin, and Miss P. Treloar are the guests of Mrs Drayton (Templeton).

RICCARTON. The usual'monthly meeting of the Riccarton scouts and cubs was held in St. Ninian's schoolroom recently, the Rev. J. Allan presiding. 4- hearty welcome was extended to two new members, Mesdames Steel and Brown. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to District Scoutmaster P. Hamilton, who is in hospital. The Methodist Sunday School children held an enjoyable concert and social recently, the Sunday School funds benefiting considerably. The concert was organised by the teachers and Miss J. Taggart, and its success was due to their untiring, efforts. Mr P. G. Clements was M.C. and Miss Dulcie Clements was the accompanist. Items were given by Joyce May, Jean Marsh, and Nancy Wood (songs), Ina Bowman and Douglas Wood (recitations), Eric and Lester Marsh (pianoforte duet), and Gwen Grainger (pianoforte solo).

BELFAST. At a meeting held in the library on Thursday afternoon, it was decided to form a branch of tho Red Cross Society. In the absence of Lady Wigram, who was unable to be present on account of the illness of Sir Henry Wigram, the objects of forming a centre were explained by Mrs Smith and Miss Guthrie, of Christchurch. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs E. Harris; secretary, Mrs J. Englefield; treasurer, Mrs S. Farquhar; committee: Mesdames H. O. Hanby, R. S. Halligan, C. Maginness, and A. L. Rogers. At a meeting of Court Star of Belfast, A.0.F., C.R. Bro. L. Stead presided. Visiting brethren from Court Papanui were welcomed by the C.R. One new member was initiated. Afterwards the members of Court Papanui were entertained at cards, and were successful in defeating the local players by a wide margin. An invitation to visit Court Woodford, Kaiapoi, was accepted, the matter of transport being left to Bros. Brown, A. E. Clarke, and Halligan.

BURWOOD. The annual break-up concert was held in tho Burwood School, with a large attendance of parents and friends. Mrs Delaney and Miss Gant provided the musical accompaniment to the various parts, which were all very well done. During the interval Mr 11. Rowse (chairman of the school committee) paid a tribute to the effective worlc done by the staff.

DOYLESTON. Arch-Druid Bro. A. J. Hall presided over tho fortnightly meeting of \tlie Ellosmere Lodge of Druids, at which there was a Targe attendance. The secretary reported having obtained new fidelity guarantee policies covering the treasurer and secretary. A team was .selected to compete in the ritual competition for the Morrison gavels, to be held at Springston on September (sth. _ Bro Hall and Sister Bishop were appointed to represent the lodge at the Old Oak Lodge's ball on September _Bth. One candidato was proposed for initiation.

HORORATA. In a friendly hockey match between the Hororata School team and the Glentunnel School team at Hororata on Thursday afternoon tho homo team won by 3 goals to one. Miss I. Hore was referco. At a meeting of the Hororata Hall Committeo Mr T. F. Hight presided. The committee met for tho purpose of revising tho charges for the hiring of tho hall. The following Hororata hockey players have been selected to represent Malvern v. Ashburton at Greendale to-day:—A team —Misses I. Horo and M. Wells and E. Chapman. B team —H. Phillips, I. Phillips, E. Gray, and P. Oliver. Mr T. Harland, jun. (Kotlierham, North Canterbury) is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. Beat tie, "Manor House."

(25.6 deg.); lowest grass minimum temperature 15deg. on 16th (12deg. on 20th); mean temperature for month 39.8deg. (41.2 deg.); mean range of temperature for month 16.9deg. In the middle of the month a very cold period, with several severe frosts in succession, was experienced. On several occasions the soil remained frozen well on into the day. Early in the month it appeared as if a, good supply of grass would be forthcoming, but the severe frosts have evidently greatly reduced growth. Stock are better than it was expected they would be.
