WINTER SHOW.
YESTERDAY'S LARGE CROWDS.
The Winter Show was thronged all day yesterday, and the attendance in tho evening Avas one of the largest of the season. In addition to the parties from the schools during the day, who numbered over 1000, 3750 adults and 1000 children passed through the turnstiles. The attractions of the Winter Show for the children arc probably even more diverse than they are for adults, and certainly the keenest enthusiasm is manifested by these parties from the schools. The amusement park naturally claims a large share of their attention, but it is obvious that the main object of the show—the encouragement of interest in the industries and. products of the Dominion—generally creates au impression on their minds. Yesterday's quotas from the schools were:—New Brighton 250, Burwood 50, St. Mary's 370, Lyttelton West* 80, Eedcliffs 50, West Christehurch 250, and Harewood CO. Miss Esther .Tames addressed the school children in the afternoon. Use of Tarm By-Products. A stall which attracted considerable attention was that sponsored by the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. The purpose of the exhibition is to illustrate how farm by-products, which ordinarily are wasted, can be put to excellent use. With the aid of a spinning wheel home-made, with a bicycle wheel playing an important part, all sorts of,helpful articles are made, such as wool quilts, mats, pillows, "humpties," sacks, and even coats. Home-made quilts stuffed with swansdown, soap, and kidskin and deerskin gloves are also displayed. During tho day exhibitions of spinning arc giver and early next week it is expected that a demonstration of the use of a weaving machine is to be made. Altogether the exhibition is both instructive and interesting. Orphans' Day. Today will be orphans' day at the Winter Show, and invitations have been issued to the children of all Christchurch orphanages to attend. They will be entertained by members of the Winter Show executive. Features of the show to-day will be the Punch aud Judy show, displays by Buckett's and Musson's pupils, and a concert in the evening by the Christehurch Municipal Band. The robot will make its last appearance to-day before being sent to Auckland for the opening of the show in the northern city. A special attraction to-night will be a cabaret dance from 8.30 to 10 o'clock.
On Wednesday of next week a concert will be given by Tr Ari Pitatna's Maori party, while on Thursday a display of physical culture will be given by the pupils of the Fendalton School. Demonstrations of rabbit-shearing will be given at 7 o'clock each evening next week.
