NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. Miss Edith Ayers, whoso marriage takes place next week, was the guest of honour at a social held in the Methodist Schoolroom. The evening was spent in vocal and musical items, community singing, and competitions. After supper a presentation of a tea waggon was made to Miss Ayers by the Rev. fa>. Henderson, on behalf of the choir and organisations of the church, with which Miss Ayers had been asso6iated. Teams from the Southbridge District High School visited Rangiora yesterday and played football, netball, and hockey matches against the Rangiora High School. The football match against the Rangiora second fifteen was won by the visitors by 5 points to 3, and the home players won the netball match by J-J points to 3, and the hockey match by -1 goals to 2. KAIAPOI. The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Bowling Club was held at the Cycle Club rooms, Kaiapoi. The vice-president, Mr S. Meneer, presided. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr S. Meneer; vice-presidents, Messrs J. W. Barnard and the Uev. VV. B. A. Vickery: secretary and treasurer, Mr W. G Wylie; committee, Messrs W. O. Tourell, F. L. Parnham, and J. R. Murphv. match committee, Messrs W. G VVvlie, J. D. Williams, and b. Meneer"; selector, Mr J. D. Williams; green superintendents, Messrs F. L. Parnham and S. Meneer; centre delegate, Mr L. B. Evans; auditor, Mr J. G. Yellowlees. . It was decided to hold the official opening of the season on the second Saturday in October.

KAIKOURA. Mrs Anne Maguire, of Postman's road, Kaikoura, was found dead in bed on Thursday morning. She was 77 years of age, and lived alone. An inquest will not be necessary. Monk won the women's competition and Mr Leo Garratt the men's. ■ MASON'S FLAT. ! The first of a series of "500" card tournaments was held in the Mason's Flat Hall, the proceeds being in aid of the Havvarden School funds Music for dancing was supplied by Mr Johnson and the Misses Johnson, fcxtias were played by Misses Brown and Leary. The winner of the womeni s tournament was Mrs Foster, and ot the men's Mr K. Pawsey. CHEVIOT. A meeting of the Cheviot Basketball Club was held in the lounge rooms. The president, Mrs G. Struthers, presided. Miss Sloss and Miss V. Ogden were elected team selectors. Correspondence was received from the KnV koura Club, advising that they would play a return match on August 2uu>, and it was decided to try to arrange with the Waikuku team to visit Cheviot on tho same day. WOODEND. Mr James Judson, whose death occurred at Woodend last week, was predeceased by his wife about 13 years ago. He is survived by a family of one son and four daughters, Mr R. E. Judson (East Oxford), Mrs B. J. Archer I (Woodville street, Christchurch), Mrs W. J. Bowman (Riccarton), Mrs J. H. | Ballinger, and Miss Jessie Judson I (Woodend). SPRINGSTON SOUTH. The monthly meeting of the Springston South Wesley Guild was held in the Springston South Hall. Mrs E. J. Harris presided. A competition was won by Mrs T. Hamilton. Mesdames N. Archbold and T. Hamilton were the hostesses at afternoon tea.

The Hall Committee's social prizes were won by Mrs U. Tyson and Mrs L. Staoe, and Messrs B. Hutchison and G. E. Baker. Mr L. Stace played for the dancing.

ISLINGTON. A carnival dance was held in the Islington Hall. Fred Smith's orchestra supplied the music, and Mr C. Neville was M.C. Miss Patricia Gordon played the extras. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss Bertha Baker and Mr J. McGregor. LADBROOKS. At tho Hall Committee's weekly social winners of competitions were Miss Lorna Pickering, Miss Ena Pickering, Mr Lester Sparks, and Mr Fred Meyerhoff Mr Roeslar and Mr Meyerhoff supplied the music for the dancing. BURWOOD. During the week the school committee held their monthly meeting, the following members being present:— Messrs H. Rowse (chairman), Stevenson (.secretary), Freeman, Smith, Busch, Currie, Freeman, and Delamain. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 107, and the average attendance 91.9. The children had collected the sum of £2 lis 8d in aid of the local orphanages. Mr Freeman, reporting on the dental clinic, stated that ftvo fresh cases had attended, making 54 for the period. The schools' allocation was £1 18s 6d. Messrs Freeman and Delamain were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Accounts for £5 6s lid were passed -for payment.

SPRINGSTON. A meeting of the Sunshine Club was held in the public hall. Mrs E. L. Neale presided. A competition for the best plate of scones was won by Miss C. Milno with Miss J. Tod second, and Miss M. Riordan third.

SOUTHBRIDGE. The Southbridge Town Hall was well filled on the occasion of an entertainment given by the Anglican Maori Mission party, under the leadership of Te Ari Pitama. Included in the programme were poi dances, games, chants, hakas, love ditties, and some palceha songs, which had been translated. Unaccompanied part singing was a feature of the entertainment. In a short introductory address Mr Pitama referred to the origin of the Maoris, their voyages in the Pacific, their coming to New Zealand, and their life in this country before the advent of the Europeans. He also dealt with the work of the Anglican Mission from the early days of settlement. The whole programme was thoroughly enjoyed and a substantial sum was raised for mission work. LEESTON. At the monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board, over whicl' Commissioner J. C. Free presided, a letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport regarding a proposal to exempt from heavy traffic fees farmers owning motor-trucks used for the transport of their farm produce. It was decided that as the Farmers' Union had not taken the matter up the Board should not express an opinion. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, asked the Board to repair a dividing fence between the Board's property and the Post Office. It was decided to comply with the request. Commissioner F. Rowell reported attended a conference of representatives of local bodies regarding a system of subsidies to the St. John free ambulance service. The delegates present had not been prepared to pledge their respective bodies to any scheme. Members stressed the need for better outgoing mail facilities, and it was decided to write to the Postmaster-General asking that arrangements should be made to have a mail sent to Christchurch every afternoon by the passenger bus serviee. It was pointed out that there had been an afternoon service for over forty years, but that it had been discontinued when the Railway Department ceased running the afternoon train to Christchurch about two years ago. Members stated that the Southbridge Town Board had decided to make a similar request, the inadequacy of the service having occasioned a great deal of inconvenience to farmers and business firms.
