FALL OF SNOW

Last week-end many Sumner residents availed themselves of the opportunity of indulging in winter sports, offered by the heavy fall of snow on the hills surrounding Sumner. Eichmond Hill appeared to be the popular rendezvous, toboggans and skis being used from an early hour in the morning until late in the evening. Rugby Football. Matches scheduled for the local club to be played this afternoon are as follows: —Third grade v. Kaiapoi, at No. 2 Show Grounds; Fifth grade v. Spreydon, at No. 31, South Park; under 16 v. Boys High School, at No. 22, South Park.

District High School. The Social Committee of the Sumner District High School has been working for some weeks in connexion with the dance to be held next Thursday evening in the Town Hall. Final arrangements have now been made. Kedcliffs School. At the school concert next Thursday evening, a public farewell will be taken of Miss Johnston and Mr Parsonage, teachers at the Eedcliffs School, who are both leaving to take up appointments elsewhere. A welcome will also bo extended to Miss Archey, who is joining the staff. Hill Roads Work in hand on the various hill roads in the borough include tho regrading of Clifton terrace from the foot of the hill, the widening and regrading of the Scarborough-Taylor's Mistake road, and the widening of the Lyttelton road near Evans Pass. Scarborough Park. The work of clearing the fire breaks in the Scarborough Park was recently put in hand. A number of trees were destroyed by fire last summer, and a total of eighty have been planted to replace these. Card Evening. At a card evening, held during tho week at Kedcliffs in aid of the SumnerEedcliffs Social Club, Mr HarVey acted as M.C., in place of Mr Emsworth, who has resigned from his official duties. Prizes were won by Mrs Thomas and Mr Jennet and by Mrs Nevatt and Mr Christensen. Plunket Society. Mrs A. W. Beaven presided over the monthly meeting of tho Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the Plunket Society, when there were present: Mesdames A. Morten, K. G. Shrimpton, G. H. Waller, H. Worrall, A. Morton, and C. E. Claydon. The nurse's report was received. An amount of £ls" was handed over as the proceeds from the children's fancy dress dance, which was recently arranged by the branch. Mrs Worrall was thanked for the use of her home for the meeting. Pigeon Club. ! Mrs L. P. lionguet was the hostess during the week at a bridge afternoon in aid of tho Sumner Pigeon Club. A prize for the best score was won by Mrs G. Jerard, and a consolation prize was awarded to Mrs de Villiera. Those present were Mesdames C. E. Claydon, G. Jerard, E. T. Chitty, de Villiers, A. A. Cheshire, J. Clark, and A. J. Malley, and Miss Mclnman. Croquet Club. At the home of Mrs E. A. Johnson, a bridge afternoon was held recently in aid of the funds of the Sumner Croquet Club. The joint hostesses were Mesdames E. A. Johnson and J. Clark. Prizes were won by Mrs J. F. Menzies, Mrs A. A. Cheshire, and Mr H. J. Williams. Those present were Mr and Mrs C E. Claydon, Mr and Mrs E. A. Johnson, Mr and Mrs J. Clark, Mesdames Crosby, H. Thomson, J. F. Menzies, A. A. Cheshire, Harbut, T. E. Whitfield, and G. Jerard, Misses Mclnman and Wood, and Mr H. J. Williams.
