trBESS ASSOCLiTIOK TELBGEAIt ) WELLINGTON, August 10. A deputation of Dunedin commercial find business interests waited on the Trime Minister to-day to urge the immediate prosecution of the erection of the new post office. Mr Forbes said that the Government had been very anxious to carry on the work, but this was precluded by financial conditions, the Government being faced with the necessity of balancing the Budget. The Government's desire was to proceed with the work as soon as possible, but until they saw the financial outlook a little clearer they did not feel justified in proceeding with such a large expenditure. It was not their desire to postpone the work indefinitely. He suggested that it was not unreasonable tg ask Dunedin people to carry on a little longer with the present post office facilities until conditions improved. He gave an assurance that no other substantial Government buildings work would bo given precedence over the Dunedin post office contract.
Tins assurance was greeted with satisfaction by the deputation.
