SUMNER ITEMS.
PUBLIC LIBRARY. A successful year has been experienced by tho Sumner Public Library, according to the annual report. An increase in subscribers, books, and subscriptions is recorded. The library ■could scarcely be in its present flourishing condition but. for the assistance of the voluntoer women librarians, whose help in the issue and the maintenance of the books has been invaluable. Road Widening. The process of obtaining spoil and rock for various borough works has resulted in improving the narrow portions of Hebordcn avenue, particularly near tho end of Bury street and near tho Scarborough tea-rooms. Several shady places formed by roeks which must have fallen many years ago have not been disturbed. Coke Crusher. I A special coke crusher has been in- | stalled at the gas works, and the two grades of coke which it produces were on view at the last meeting of the. Council. That there is a big demand for this product is shown by the fact that of the 200 tons in stock two months ago there are at present only 45 left. Estuary Changes. j An indication of tho many changes which are constantly taking place in the estuary was given recently when it was discovered that pipes to the old j pumping station across the mud flats j were broken. These pipes formerly were resting on tho mud. but at present, underneath one section there is a depth of 12 feet of water at liigli tide. The Boat Harbour. The spring tides of a few weeks ago, as well as causing slight damage on the beach, damaged the seaward side of the protective breakwater at the .Scarborough boat harbour. Men are at present. engaged in repairing the damage, and with a crane are obtaining rocks from the vicinity of the breakwater. Rugby Football. The third and fifth grade teams arc still maintaining their positions at_ the head of their respective competitions. To-day the third grade will play Sydenham at St. Leonard's Square, while the fifth grade side meets Bromley at Bromley Park, Buckley's road. In the under 36 competition the club's team is drawn to play Technical Old Boys' 13 at Ko. 25 South Park. SERIES OF BURGLARIES. —- THREE MEN PLEAI) GUILTY. (PRESS tSSOCJATJCS TiLBOBAM.) WANGANUI, July 2S). The preliminary hearing of a number of charges connected with the burglaries in Wanganui, exteudiug trom January 1o December lust, took place to-duy. Herbert, Viviau Wrilki ngtcn But trey and Victor Robert, Ward, labourers,'pleaded guilty to several charges, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Thomas Butler, a farmer, admitted two charges, and he was also committed. Ward and Butler were altowed bail.
