APPEAL FOR COAL.
* DEMAND ON MAYOR'S FUND. A gift of two trucks of coal lias been made by Mr R. E. McDougall for the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund. Making this announcement to The Pees* on Saturday the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.",)- said that the Coal and Blanket Fund Committee had already distributed coal to more than 2500 families. If to that number were added those who had been assisted with coal and firewood from the Mayor's Distress Fund, a total of no fewer than 30CO families must have been helped thi.> winter with coal, firewood, and blankets. Enquiries were being made with a view to assisting another 150 families. Appeal for Help. , ''How I am going to finance this demand 1 do not know," stated the Mayor. "J undertook to provide £IOO a week, but the expenditure has been more than double that amount. At present the fund is heavily in debit, and somehow the accounts will have to be met. People sitting around their fires with their, children on those bitter winter nights will visualise the condition of those families who are still 1 without coal and firewood. I am sure that those who can help will do so. If persons cannot give substantial sums perhaps they could in very many instances give the price of a bag of coal, about 5s 6d." The Mayor is personally' giving the price of twenty bags of coal. Mrs A. 1. Fraer. who for some months has been iu charge of a relief depot in the basement of the Majestic Theatre, announced on Saturday that the depot was being shifted to a building next to Manning's brewery in Ferry road. The first issue of rations from the new quarters will be made next Tuesday.
