In Paris the red ribbon of tbe Legion of Honour was recently awarded to a raau named Giroudaux because he bad been the first peraon -who, fifty years ago, subscribed to tbe newly-introduced telephone-t—truly a "heroic deedJ in tbe eighties of the last century -there were only about 200 telephone subscribers in Paris; at first they had ntK number, "but were rung nn by name. It is difficult to imagine how this system could have been kept up even for a week, though of course it is possible that wrong names were called less .often then than wrong numbers are now.
