MAGISTERIAL. .. TUESDAY. (Ijcforo Air E. D. Mosley, S.M.) LICENSING CASES. Ilcnry Hansen, Morris "Ward, and Alfred Wilkes were each fined 20s and costs for being on the licensed premises of the Belfast Hotel after hours. * Catherine Young was fined' £3 and costs for selling liquor after hours. William Hallay was fined £2 and costs for supplying liquor after hours. ORDER BROKEN. Carl Kortegast was convicted ind discharged for a broach of his prohibition order. THEFT OF.GAS. Raymond Edward Kirk, a labourer, aged 20, was charged with stealing 8900 feet of gas, valued at £4 9s Bd, the property of the Christchurch Gas Company. Ho was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. Senior-Sorgoant J. Fox said the accused was living in a house to whidh gas was supplied by a "shilling in the slot" meter. Whan the meter was read on September 2!)tb all was in order, but on December Cth it was found that although 8900 feet had been used there was only one shilling in tha meter. The accused had stated that there must be something wrong with the meter. It was examined by the Gas Company, but tho accused eventually admitted that by certain means he had been able to obtain gas without putting in the shillings. TJnforturntelv he could not stop the meter registering the pas used. REMANDED. Jolin Ebenezer Kelly Brown, a doctor, aged 45, was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Hereford street. Counsel said there were peculiar, circumstances which would have to come before the Court. The accused was at present in Lewjsham Hospital with pneumonia. Recently he had been attending influenza patients. On Monday he had been ill in bed, but had got up to attend some patients. During the afternoon he had received an urgent call, and had again got out of bed. Before going out he took some medicine and a small glass of port. After his arrest doctors who examined the accused immediately ordered him to hospital. The accused was remanded to nppear on January 14th, bail beinsr allowed in self £'2s and one surety of £23. Conway Bvaddoll, a steeplejack, aged 45, was charged with being intoxicated in charge of n car in Lichfield street and with negligent driving. He was remanded to appear on January 14th, bail bein*r allowed in self £25 and one surety of £25. A MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. Charles Neilson, a labourer, aged 41, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour for being drunk in' charge of a horse and cart. Senior-Serg3ant Fox said the accused had 16 previous convictions for being drunk in charge of a horse and cart. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. George Banks, a labourer, aged 19, was charged with indecently assaulting a. female. iJe pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. SENT TO THE BORSTAL. Thomas Ernest Downes,, a labourer, aged 10, appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing a bicycle valued at £4, the property of Phillip Douglas Hewlani, and on a charge of stealing a bicycle valued at £4, the property of some person unknown. Th" Magistrate said it was in the accasftd'fl in-tcii-sts that he be put under some form of control. Downes was senienced to twelve months in the Borstal Institute on each charge. He was convicted and discharged rrn three charges of breaches of the Arms Act. FINEID FOR RECEIVING. Hugh Charles Downes, a saddler, was charged with receiving a bicycle valued at £4, the property of Phillip Douglas Hewland, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. He was fined £3; in default of payment ivithin 11 days, 21 days' imprisonment. CASE DISMISSED. James Alexander Shaw was charged that vith intent to defraud, he attempted to obnir. 5s from the North Canterbury Hos- *>: Ia I Board by false pretences. The case *as dismissed.

UNEMPLOYMENT ACT. Eeath and Co., Ltd., were convicted and discharged for employing a person for more than seven days after his unemployment levy was due. On a similar charge Harry Waters was fined 30« and costs. Thomas Wilce Will* was convicted and fined Ss without costs on one charge pi failing to pay his unemployment levy, and on threo other charges was convicted and discharged. Robert Standeven was fined 30s and costs for failing to deduct the emergency unem? ployment charge from the wages of his employees, and was c*lered to pay 7s 2d, treble the amount of the tax. John Michael was ordered to pay Supply Stores, Ltd., the sum of £2 12s 6d forthwith, in default three days' imprisonment. CHILDREN'S COURT. " SERIES OF THEFTS BY BOYS. Two youths, aged 16 and 17, were charged with converting motor-cars and stealing goods, the gross sum involved being £584 4s, before Mr K. D. Mosley, S.M:, at the Children's Court yesterday. They wer* charged with converting three motor-cars to a total value, of £460,- with breaking and entering three shops and a garage and stealing from them goods and money to a value of £2O 14s, with breaking and entering two dwellings, and stealing from one of them jewellery valued at £56, and from the other a camera valued at £4, and also with the theft of blankets, a rifle, a tent, and other goods to a total of £8 10s. Chief-Detective Carroll said that tha youths had started by stealing money from a house they knew well. They had then taken a car, and had set out for Blenheim and Neleon, stealing a camera and again some jewellery. They had next gone to Rakaia, stealing oq the way and, converting a third car on their return to Christchurch, set out for the West Coast. They had got »tuck in the Bealey river, and had been detained by the nublican there. Little of the stolen property had been recovered. The elder boy had previously besn before the Court for theft, but tlier* was no pievious charge against the other. Both boys were ordered to* be detained for a period of three years in the Borstal Institution, it being recommended that the elder should be rent to the Waikpria Training Farm.
