The confident tone of Press and other comment on the fall in the exchange value of-the pound this week found an echo to-day in the House of Commons; when Mr; Neville Chamberlain (Chancellor of th'e Exchequer) said he understood the weakness of exchange (vas primarily due to factors abroad, not under our control, coinciding with t'eovy seasonal and other demands for imports. , He added: I see no - reason to yiew the recent movements with apprehension. , Replying to a question, Mr Neville Chamberlain said no restrictions operated on the purchase of foreign exchange for normal trading purposes. He advised the withdrawal of restrictions on speculative purchases, as they •would not assis.t the market forward. Exchanges needed traders. Sir Herbert Samfiel (Home - Secretary), in reply to a question, said he did not contemplate legislating to permit the promotion of sweepstakes in Great Britain. _ The Prime Minister. Mr Ranisav MaeDonald, announced that he hoped it would be possible to take a motion for an adjournment' for the Christmas re cess oji Friday week.
