EGG-LAYING.

UTILITY POULTRY CLUB. ANNUAL COMPETITION. Following are the results of thq New Zealand Utility Poultry Club's 26th Annual Competition held at ; Papanui. The -competition commenced on April 6th, and concluded on March 28th, 1931 (a period of 51 weeks). In Test No. 1 the J. H. Shaw Memorial Challenge Test, for Light and Heavy Breeds, each to be single pen tested, twenty-seven birds competed. In Test No. 2, each competitor to enter three White Leghorn Pullets, to be single pen tested, 192' birds were entered, In Test No. 3, for Black Orpingtons, three bird single pen test, 27 birds competed. / In Test No. 4, for any other variety of light or heavy breeds other than White Leghorns or Black Orpingtons, three bird single pen test, 33 birds competed. : In Test No. 5, for flock teams of six ! birds, light or heavy breeds, twelve teams competed. In Test No. 6, for three purebred ducks, to be single pen tested, fourteen teams competed- I —<s Pekins, 9 Khaki Campbells, 3 White Runners, 24 Fawn and White runners. A total of ,421 birds took part in the competition. * All birds were inspected on entering the competition by the Government poultry instructors, Messrs P. 0. Brown and C. Cussen, and any specimens of - the v breed entered with Undesirable breed points, or any bird suffering from a disease, or that in the opinion of the judges was not a fair specimen of the breed was returned to its owner and replaced during the first week of the competition. No competitor's bird was eligible for any prize-money, or the performance recognised in any form whatever by the club when the eggs did not average 240z or more to the dozen for - hens and 260z or more per dozen for ducks, from April 27th, 1930, to March 28th, 1931. The competitions are decided upon by the number of eggs laid, subject to the above condition. All eggs; are kept ! separate and weighed weekly. All biTds were judged as exhibition specimens, in June, September, and February. The week's eggs from each pen were judged at the same time for shape, colour, texture, and -weight. Prizes are awarded for the above judging, and the Studholme contest, liggins Leghorn shield, Orpington and duck shields are decided on the number of eggs and points scored for quality of eggs and as exhibition specimens. The competition is supported by the Government, and is one of the best tests of its kind in the world. Competitors from all parts of the Dominion regularly com- ' pete, and tl j world's records established prove that the ta increase the general average an£ size o$ eggs,, is being achieved.' The winter test iij awarded to the competitor's : birdß in each -test ■ laying the greatest number of eggs between the dates of April 6th, 1930, and July 29th, 1930 (inclusive).
