HOME SERVICE ASSOCIATION.

annual meeting. The annual meeting of the Home Service Association was held last night in the Y.M.C.A. Concert Hall, Mrs' Stephen Parr presiding. The annual report and the balance-sheet, which showed a satisfactory credit 'balance, were adopted on the motion of Miss M. B. Lovejl-Smith, seconded by Mrs D. E. Hansen. Annual Report. The second annual report showed that the work of the Home Service Association had steadily advanced during the year. The Association had been registered as an incorporated society. The committee during the year "nad instituted a training school scheme, a Home Service Creche, and a Home Service Club for women and girls, all of which ventures, starting from small beginnings, had proved worth while. " ' The Association had been successful in finding capable, kindly housekeepers tc» take charge of homes temporarily in times of emergency, dressmakers, nurse companions, the nurses to attend daily, night nurses, ladies to read to invalids, or take charge of sick children, women to arrange suppers, weddings, dinner parties, women to act as temporary cooks, and women to cover furniture. The' services _of the Association had reached from Gisbprne to Waimate, from the Franz Joser Glacier to the Chatham Islands. Fifteen hundred and seventy employers had applied for help during the year and no fewer than 2720 workers had been listed on the Association's books.

The conditions existing in the City, as the result of unemployment, he knew, in. many cases, were appalling, and he was pleased to know that the Association . was assisting women who were out of work. Mr Archer dwelt on the dignity of labour, and impressed on his hearers the fact that all work was noble work if done in the right spirit. The slogan, "Efficiency and reliability," which the 'Association had adopted, should have an excellent effect on the commdnity, and he urged his hearers to set their faces against all attempts to underpay labour. Mr E. H. 8. Hamilton prefaced his short address by remarking that he was pleased to learn that Auckland had, at last, realised that something good had come out of Christchurch} and were copying the idea of the.Home Sorvice Association. He dealt briefly with the usefulness of the Association's training school scheme, by which efficiency would be assured, the Association's creche, and its club for women and girls, who, frequently, when engaged in domestic service, were not provided by their employers with sufficient comfort in their leisure hours. Mr Hamilton commended the Association's principle of bringing- the. gospel of service for others ana thoughtfulness for others into daily home-life. A very hearty vote of thanks, to the Association's secretary, Mrs Hewland, was carried by acclamation, on, the motion of Mrs J. K. Archer, who said that Mrs Hewland's enthusiasm, optimism, and business ability had proved invaluable to the Association. Votes of thanks were accorded the - Mayor.
