FOOTBALL.

CANTERBURY UNION. ! OPENING OF SEASON. tljhis year's' competition for tlve championship promises to be the most even for some "yearß. There have been a number of changes in the' personnel of the teams, and to date it is apparent there are no really outstanding fifteens. On the oval, Christchurch, last year s champions, will meet Merivale, and an interesting game should result. Christchurch have lost a number of their prominent players, but still , have a strong side. Merivale are likely to have a much improved fifteen, with plenty of spirit in .the backs. It is on the cards that they will provide some of the high-lights in this year's Rugby. Sydenham, a very much improved team, play Linwood on the south ground. This also should provide a' close and interesting contest. On the west ground the senior B teams of Old Boys and Merivale will be seen in action. 'Varsity, who are reputed to be a strong side, meet Albion at Rugby Pork. The latter are a well-balanced side, and here again a close game should result. Out-at the Show Groundß, the newlyformed Athletic team will take the _ field against Old Boys. The Whites are said to be rather weak forward, and Athletic fairly strong in that division. The new club are an unknown quantity, and it is expected that it will have rather a hard row to hoe this, their first, year. On the No. 2 ground at the Show Grounds, Athletic thirds meet Kaiaipoi.
