J After rain overnight and heavy showers this morning, the weather proved fine for the opening of the Auckland Trotting Club's November Meeting at Alexandra Park to-day. The track was slow after the rain, And in consequence the times were affected. There were very few visltihg horses at the Meeting, and South Island horses were conspicuous by their absence. One of the visitors, Logan's Pride, who hails from Wellington, scored a double win in the

two leading events. Most of the winners were well backed, and the racing did not provide any real surprises, ' although the defeats of several hot favourites were costly to investors. Confidence Justified. Tho improving Royal Triumph was backed down to odds-on, for the Waitemata Handicap, and he justified the confidence of his supporters, by Winning very easily. With the exception of Lord Haldane, who broke, and was pulled np, the field went away well. Lady Ena leading out from Royal Triumph and Parrish Belle. Royal Triumph assumed command after going three furlongs, and he cleared right away, to win easing up from Ben Bingen, who had no difficulty in beating tho others after breaking badly two furlongs from home, where he was being sent along in a hopeless endeavour to catch the winner. Gold Sovereign trotted a fair race to get third, and Windchat, fourth, also made a respectable showing after breaking early. Royal Triumph has registered three wins and a third in his last four starts, and will not be long in winning his way into better company. Parrish Belle went well for about a mile, and the* fell back beaten. A Mild Surprise. The moderately-fancied Gumdigger effected a mild surprise in defeating the favourite, First Flight, in the Improvers' Handicap. First Flight, Lady Vvonne, and Great Fame broke at tho start, Gumdigger leading out from A 1 John, Kewpie's Triumph, and Great, Vanity. These horses retained the leading positions until nearing the horn*

turn where First Flight went up fast ' ( he outside. However, she could " t rea( .h Gumdigger, who stayed on to boat her by throe-parts of a length. Kewpie's Triumph was half a leng h a wav third, and V-Jiakahihi fourth, next coming Dad'a Hope and Zealous. First Flight was unlucky to lose, as she lost seconds at the start, and then had to cover considerable ground on the outside of a bunched field. Gumdigger is a solid customer, who may soon win again. The three-year-old, Kewpie's Triumph, shaped rather well. Unfortunate Break. What promised to be a good finish In the Jeliicoe Handicap was spoilt by the leaders. Mountain Dell and Warplane, breaking at the homo turn, and dropping right out of the contest. As & result, Logan's Pride and Great Peter practically had the final issue to themselves Logan's Pride staying on solidly to 'score in good stylo. Hal Glumes carried the field along until nearly two furlongs from home, when Mountain Dell and Warplane, who had been racing just in behind, dashed to the lead. They were disputing every yard when Mountain Dell tangled and Warplane followed suit. Logan's Pride and Great Peter then came through on the inside, Logan 'k Pride winning by about a length. Hal Chimes was a moderate third, and Warplane fourth. Logan's Pride finished on well and might have won even if the others had not broken, although there might not have been a great deal in it one way or the other. Great Peter had every chance and was a tired horse at the finish. Hal Chimes and Sunahower both paced solid races, but Machine Gun never made an Impression and was always well back. Spectacular Finish.

There was a spectacular finish in the Parncll Handicap, Gold Treasure getting up on the outside to win from Arachne with the next four horses in a bunch. Gold Treasure, Little Guy, and Mignonne were the favourites. Mignonne and Dealer settled thoir chances at the start, but the limit horses all went away well. Little Guy and Nelson Dillon led for a furlong, when some Dillon assumed command only to break and lose his position as the field entered on the second lap. Benefice was then left in charge from Dan Direct, Nelson Dillon, and Arachne. Dan Direct and Nelson Dillon were first into the straight. Arachne and Gold Treasure challenged. Gold Treasure finished on best to beat Arachne by a nose. Benefice was three parts of a length away, third, and Some Dillon fourth, with Nelson Dillon, Little Guy, and Dan Direct almost in line. It was a fine race and the first six horses all paced soundly. Some Dillon might have won only fur his mistake, but the likeliest improver may be Little Guy. who finished on well. From End to End.

Linnett the Groat was installed a good favourite for the Mountain Trot Handicap, and she duly scored, leading from end to end to win from Anseline and Paradigm, who were always' her closest attendants. The winner was brought out from England by F. J. Smith, who drove hor. tshc raced well here luet season, and looks like doing well again this term as she has had only a short preparation after a spell, and is not yet at her best. Anseline and Paradigm had a great tussle for second, and Anseline just took the position by half a head. Etta Cole, who finished fourth, was making a fast run near the home turn and was rapidly overhauling the leaders, when she broke. Gold Sovereign and Sebisca failed to go solidly, although Sebisca displayed speed in patches. The back-nmrkor, Tiger Salve, ran up behind the leaders after going a mile, but stopped very badly at the finish. Stanmore's Good Fortune. Belle Axworthy was a short-priced favourite for the November Handicap, but after losing some ground at the start, Bhc stumbled after running up ! handy at tho halt' mile, and broke up badlv, effectually settling her chance. Goldman carried the field along earjy and then Daytime and Master Huia went away in front. Daytime, Master Huia, Goldman, and Queen Elizabeth came round the home turn in a bunch, but they came away from the rails, leaving a beautiful opening on the fence for Stanmoor, who finished on gamely under pressure to win by half a length from Queen Elizabeth. Master Huia was two lengths back, third, and Goldman fourth. The run on the rails won for Stanmoor, whose latest form has been remarkably consistent. Queen Elirabeth was the unlucky one, as she would have won only for being taken so wide. A Good Contest. Trustworthy, Explosion, and Te Wahia were best backed in a good pool on the Stewards' Handicap, which provided an interesting contest. Stoney and Warspite were responsible for the pacemakiug, with Explosive and Trustworthy next in a bunched field. Explosion took charge with a lap to go, and led until two furlongs from home, when Trustworthy assumed command to be first into the straight from Gang Awa' and Te Wahia. In a punishing finish Te WaUia beat Trustworthy by a neck, Gold Dial being two lengths away third. Explosion wan fourth and Gang Awa' fifth. The winner was patiently driven by R. A. McMillan, and never left tho rails until the home turn. Gang Awa', who made a fine run acros the top, weakened at the finish, but she was on the outside most of the way, and may do better next time out. Logan'a Pride Again. The Jellieoe Handicap winner, Logan's Pride, completed the double by brilliantly winning the Electric Handicap, for which he was third fancy in the betting, the favourites being Belle Axworthy and Enawah. Woodvale made most of the running, and he was still In command at the home turn, where Belle Axworthy, Enawah, Rockbum, and Logan's Pride were challenging on the outside. Once the straight was reached Logan's Pride asserted his superiority and won decisively by a length from Rockburn, who beat Enawah by a head. Woodvale was fourth and Belle Axworthy fifth. The winner is right* at the top of his form, aiid after coming very -wide round th& turn smothered the opposition at the finish. Rockburh battled on surprisingly, and just outstayed Enawah, who covered more ground than anything except tW winner. Belle Axworthy hnr] but failtfd in the straight However, she need not be discredited because she is a good mare who will surely do better. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY. OBEEN LANK HANDICAP, In harness. Tue withdrawal of Pandoor, Blue China, and Ohai saved the Trial Stakes from being run ill two divisions, and the best backed were Cough (£l9Bs), Night Rose (£I69J), and Uxbridge (£163). Archdeacon was left from an otherwise good start, and Cyrille &t once jumped out in front and was followed by Toreador and Glass Jug over the first two furlongs. Racing to the 1 far turn Cyrille was three lengths clear | of Glass Jug, Toreador, and Trooper North. Cyrille led Glass Jug and Toreador into the straight, Trooper North and Night Lark falling just on the turn. Cyrille ran home an easy winner by four lengths from Glass Jug, who beat Polling Day by a length. Night Rose, Toreador, and Johnny Phar were next. Mr J. Low, of Wanganui, was present to see his horse win. An B»sy Win. Pamela was withdrawn from the Hokonui Harness Trot, and the good betting was spread between the braeketed pair, Ellegro and Native Chief (£153), Metro (£155), Southern Don (£137), and Sunflash (£I34J). Native Chief refused to leave the mark, and Baby Joan, War Paint, and Southern Don led over the first half-mile. Then they were joined by Jolly Wave, who took charge. With half a mile to go Jolly Wave and Baby Joan drew right away from the remainder of the field, at the head of which were Ellegro and Winning Wave. Ellegro broke three furlongs from home. Jolly Wave led Baby Joan into the straight and ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Baby Joan, with Winning Wave four lengths off third. Sunflash, War Paint, and Sunny Gold were noxt.

A. Close Finish. Celerity 11. (£460) and Night Maid (£262 i) were the only two baeked in the Winton Cup. Evening and Circulation raced a couple of lengths in front of the favourite and Night Maid until approaching the home turn, where the favourite ran up and led Evening and Night Maid into the straight. The lastnamed made a well-timed run from the distance post and only failed to reach Celerity 11. by half a head. Evening was two and a half lengths further ! back, and Black Duke veas a poor fourth. The Hon. P, de la Perrellc, j Minister for Internal Affairs, presented I the trophy attached to the stake to Mr j Alex. Chisholm. The Steeplechase. Maungamoe (£.340}) was backed down to an odds-on price in the Winton Steeplechase. Craigmore jumped to the front at the initial fence and led Double Soult, Valves, and the favourite over the stand double. At tj»e next fence, the sod wall, Craigmore was over twenty lengths in front of Valves, Maungamoe, Star Tractor, and Double Soult. Entering the last mile Valves, Maungamoe, and Star Tractor cloßed on Craigmore, who had hit a couple of fences hard, and five furlongs from home Valves took the lead firom Star Tractor and the favourite, who,' .with Craigmore, was showing signs of dls-. tress. Valves negotiated the last two fences safely and ran home an easy [ winner by eight lengths from Star Tractor, Who beat Maung&mde by thirty lengths. Craigmore was a head away fourth. Double Soiilt was pulled up after going a mile and a half. Favourite Disftpp6ints. Full Fling (£245) was made a better favourite than either Caterpillar or Impertinence in tho Flying Handicap, another one-dividend race. Caterpillar was the smartest to begin and led B-ttle Maid and the favourite to the far turn, where the latter joined Battle Maid. Caterpillar led Battle Maid and Impertinence into the straight and staved on to -win comfortably by half a "length from Impertinence. Bittle Maid was two lengths off third, and the favourite a poor fourth. Unruly Horace. [ Cetohela was tho only withdrawal from the Barkly Hack Handicap, and Miss Redowa (£Bs2s) was made a little better favourite than Palermo (£243). A. Barclay, who weighed-out to ride Sentinel Lad, got kicked, and B. J. Mackie was substituted. This held up the start twenty minutes, and several of the field were very unruly, making the delay in heavy rain, a long and quite unfair one to the well-behaved horses. When the barrier was released the rider of Poor Boy got knocked off. Palermo was the smartest to jump out, and he led along the back from Wise Choice, Miss Redowa, Night Effort, and Crubenmore. There was no change racing across the top, and Palermo led into the straight, from Wise Choice, Miss Redowa, and Crubenmore, Palermo held his advantage, and won comfortably from Crubenmorb, who beat Wiße Choiee by half a length for seeond ttionGy. Sailing Home and Miss Redowa were next. Saddle Tret. Jolly Wave, Jane'b Bell, Lady Direct, and Reta were withdrawn from the Otapiri Saddle Trot, in which the heavy betting was divided between Seaworthy (£3IOJ) and June Nelson (£278). June Nelson was quickly taken to the front, and led Prairie King and Master Boy for half a mile. Then Master Boy took charge, and led June Nelson, Paramount, and Jack Hammer along the back. The favourite ran into second place at the far turn, and waited on Master Boy until the top of the straight, then drew out to beat him home easing up by five lengths. Celeste was twenty lengths away third, followed by Master Jack, Paramount, and Glen Wilkes, j Special Sun and Lady Voisin lost their chanees at the start. j Tradesmen's Handicap. King Balboa, Membo, and Cupid's Dart were withdrawn from the Tradesmen's Handicap, and Mount Boa (£4524) was sent out an odds-on chance, with Red Boa (£354) and Some Toff (£3l2s) well backed.
