UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD.

MR M'BRINE'S POSITION. (l'£E9» ASSOCIATION TILKORIU.) AUCKLAND, November 19. The annauncement of the appointment of Mr Oscar Mcßrine, president of the Auckland Waterside Workers' • Union, to a &eat on the Unemploy. ment Board as one of the representatives of the workers' organisations lent added interest to the meeting of members of the Union to-day. Members had met on Tuesday to request the president to explain why he had allowed himself to be nominated for the Board, contrary to the wishes of the Union. The Alliance of Labour, to which the union is affiliated, had decided not to take part in the setting up of the Board, contending that the unions should bo allowed to select their own representatives. The meeting was adjourned until to-day, when the position was again discussed, without, however, reaching any anality. No information as to the trend of the discussion was given for publication. but from the demeanour of individual members it was gathered that the general opinion was that Mr McBrine's position in the union baa become untenable. There was no suggestion that he would be expelled but there was a general belief that he would eventually relieve the tension by resigning his official position and possibly his membership. The manner in which tlie registrations have been handled by the Post Office has drawn complimentary references from those connected ,-ith the administration of the Act. No trouble whatever has been experienced, and registration has been carried out without a hitch- » The arrangement of the registrations in alphabetical order is well advanced, and this task proving particularlv arduous. The first instalment of the levy of 30s a year has already been paid by many people.
