GOVERNMENT GRANT.
HUMANE SOCIETY'S FEARS. The fact that the funds of tho Royal Human© Society of New Zealand are at a low ebb led the chairman of the Court of Directors (Rev. Canon W, S. Bean) to remark at yesterday's meeting that the vote of £IOO from the Government was the society's salvation. The society has not received the vote for the present year, and in view of the Government's of retrenchment, some anxiety was expressed at the meeting as to the Government's intentions. "If the Government feel disposed to practise economy in some directions, and I think they are quite justified in doing so," said tho chairman, "I think that we, as the only Royal Humane Society in New Zealand, ought to receive the full £IOO. This vote is our salvation." Mr A. W. Owles said that from North Cape to the Bluff no one would object to the society receiving £IOO. If Sir Heaton Rhodes were approached and asked to do his utmost to see that che vote.was forthcoming, he thought that they would get it. He did not think for a moment that , the Government would stop the vote. It was decided that the secretary (Mr O. J. Treleaven) should write to Sir Heaton Rhodes, and place before him the society's claims.
