NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. CANTERBURY TEAM LEAVES to-night. Tho six Canterbury boxing representatives wlio will take 'part' ixi tho New Zealand amateur hoxirig championship, to be held at Palraeraton North at the end of the week,, leave for- the north by this evening's ferry, and will have two days in Palmcrston before the, contests begin. It is anticipated that at least three of the team have very good prospects of reaching the final rounds, while all should do reasonably well. J. Johnston, in _tho fly-weight class, gave an attractive display at the recent ,local ■ championships, and W. Davey,' bantam-weight, has had considerable boxing, experience. He has represented Canterbury previously in New Zealand championships and i» a faet, clean, and hard hitter with excellent prospects. P. Hawes, who will box in tho .featherweight in place of C. G. Winder, who'has been unable to obtain leave to make the trip, is one of the cleverest boxers seen hero for some time, and is expected to have q, good chance of winning .the title. In the- welter and light-heavy divisions, G. Forward • and E. Pocock are • solid fighters; the former having won * all hi 3 recont bouts on knock-outs. They should both make a good' showing Canterbury's best hope lies in C. Gardner, the present Dominion heavy-weight champion. 'As Gardner has improved . considerably in'the last two months, he is expected to win -the- title. ■ The team will bo accompanied by Messrs C. H. Taylor, jun., as manager, and - J. Thomson 'as trainer.
