SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Miss C. Elworthy (Craigmore) has returned from a visit to Ohristchurcli. Mr and Mrs W. H. Orbell and Mr D. Orbell returned from Christchurch on Saturday night. Mrs 0. E. Thomas and Miss D. Rhodes (Hadlow) returned yesterday from a visit to Christchurch. Miss M. Loughran (Fan-lie), who is the guest of Mrs S. Mackenzie (Otumar'ama), will return home to-day. Mrs M. A. Raymond, Wai-iti road, arid Mrs F. G. M. Raymond, Wai-iti avenue, have returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs E. C. Studholme and Miss J. Studholme, who have been on a visit to Christchurch, have returned home. The following have been recent guests at. tho Dominion Hotel:—Miss E. Brown (Dunedin), Messrs M. F. Richards (Dunedin), L. C. Clarkson (Christchr.rch), and YV. Smith (Pembroke). Latest arrivals at the Grosvenor Hotel include Lieut, and Mrs F. R. Jessell (H.M.S Dunedin). Mr and Mrs D Ileid (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs B. Ireland (Invereargill), Miss P. Sweetman (Invercargill), Messrs L. C. McArthur (Christchurch), W. J WcCullum (Wellington), D Lingham (Ballarat), G. Holford (Christchurch), H E. Ann-ett (Matangi), R. Adamson (Oamaru), H. C Sinclair (Christchurch), J. M. Chantwell (Christchurch), J. R. Vernham (Wellington), and A. Lush (Christchurch). MISSIONARY RALLY. There was a large attendance at the Church Missionary Society rally in St. John's schoolroom last evening. The Rev. E. C. W. Powell (chairman) welcomed the speakers, Miss L. Mitchell, from Calcutta, Miss F. Smith, from India, and Miss M. Jennings, .from China. Miss 'Smith spoke of the work in the diocese of Dornakal. The whole work therq, she said, showed the enormous power latent in the native pastor. Miss Jennings outlined the work being done in China. Miss Mitchell told of the part the British had in the taking of Jerusalem and then spoke of Church Missionary Society work there. Tho rally will bo continued to-day. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED. The engagement is announced of the Earl of Stradbroke's youngest daughter to Major Douglas Bcresford Ash, of Londonderry.
