SCHOOL YEAR.
TEACHERS OPPOSE CHANGE. A well attended meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held on Friday night. Mr D. M. Shirlaw, president, was in the chair. Business relating to alterations of future conferences was brought forward by Mr J. Poison. The question of the "Long Vacation" and the changing to February, was fully discusesd. A motion was carried, that this branch oppose any alterations in the present time, so far as Canterbury is concerned, as it would not be in the best interests of the children, and for the following reasons:— (1) Shops, lawyers' offlceß, factories, usually have their annual holidays at Christmas, or in January. Their busy time commences in February. (<*; In North Canterbury, the harvest is over by February. (3) Average temperature over a number of years in February is 73.8, and in January 73.3, which shows very little difference. (4; Children boarding at schools would naturally go 1 home for Christmas and would not return until after the New Year. (5) It is felt that the weather problem is a local problem, not a Dominion one. The branch also discussed the Education Commiltee's report. The branch in general, gave strong approval to the report.
