RELIEF WORKS.
SUBSIDY IN DEMAND. [THB PBBSS Special Servlco.] WELLINGTON, August 18. Forty-nine local bodies have applied for the recently increased Government subsidy upon relief works expenditure, the amount involved being £56,464, according to a statement by the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, in reply to an urgent question upon the point by Mr D. G. Sullivan (Lab., Avon) in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Sullivan asked whether local bodies were availing themselves of the Government's offer to subsidise labour costs on relief work at the rate of £2 for £l, instead of £ for £ as formerly. He also asked whether it was the opinion of the Government that the increase in the subsidy would assist unemployment to any extent. The Prime Minister replied that the forty-nine local bodies had been responsible for sixty-eight applications, all of which had been, approved. The exact extent of local 'body relief work was not known, but it must be considerable, as one local authority alone was employing, 300 men on relief works.
