Chappie, who has been staying with his sister, Mrs A. A. McDonald. Wai-iti. road. Timaru, has left for Wellington The engagement is announced of Miss Ruth Scannell, only daughter of Mr and Mrs David Scannell, of Hastings, and Mr Gordon Clirystall, Tikirere. Moawhango, son of the late Mr W. Chrvstall, and of Mrs Clirystall, of Christchureh. The latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal are Mr T. H. McNeill (Dunedin) are among the recent arrivals at the New Brighton Cafe, New Brighton. Miss Merle Sowden, who has recently joined tho staff of the West Christchurch School, was entertained at afternoon tea by the teachers of the Waltham School. The headmaster, Mr Wickes, after congratulating Miss Sowden on her promotion, referred to her good work at Waltham School, and asked her to accept, on behalf of the staff, an electric reading lamp. The pupils of Standard V. presented her with a picture and wished her every success in her new position. St. Margaret's College will hold its annual bazaar on Thursday, August 21st, 2.30 to 8, in the School Hall, Cranmer square. The bazaar will bo opened at 2.30 by Miss Julius, and it is hoped that a large number of friends of the school will be present. The bazaar is in aid of the charities supported by the school, viz., the Kilburn Orphanages in England, St. Saviour's Orphanage, and the Melanesian Mission. National dances in costume will bo performed by some of tho children at 3.15 and 7 p.m., and afternoon tea will be obtainable. The Christchureh Male Voice Choir, under Dr. J. C. Bradshaw, visited tho Soldiers' Sanatorium, Cashmere, on Saturday, and gave a most enjoyable concert to the patients and staff. . Tho choir's brightest numbers, accompanied and unaccompanied, were sung, including "Laughing" and a group of sea chanties. Solos were contributed by Messrs S. C. Andrews, E. Rogers, A. J. Allen, F. 0. Penfold, H. E. Hamilton, R. S. H. Euchanan, W. J. Richards, and J. Graham Young. Accompanying the choir were Miss Mabelle Esquilant, who sang several delightful songs, and Miss Aileen Warren, the society's accompanist, who did excellent service as accompist to the soloists. Mr F. A. Judkins played* the accompaniments to several of the choir numbers. A vote of thanks, moved by the secretary bf tho Social Committee, and carried enthusiastically, was responded to by Dr. Bradshaw. RED DIAMOND CLUB. In the third round of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Championship, played at Shirley yesterday, Miss Ma barley Bead el beat Miss Edna YV'hito-Parsons, and Miss B. Gould beat Mrs M. H. Godby. In the semifinal, Miss Chrystall will play Miss Gould arid-Miss Beade] will play Miss B. Rutherford. The annual stafif dance of Calder Mack ay and Co., Ltd., will be held at Dixieland on Thursday evening. Invitations have been issued by the Insurance Officers' Guild of New Zealand, Christohurch district, for their annual dance, to be held in the Winter Garden on Tuesday, September 2nd. NAVY LEAGUE DANCE. Last night the girls' branch of the Navy League entertained the petty officers and men of 11.M.5. Dunedin at a very cheery dance at the Navy League Hall, and, after supper, at a skating party. A most enjoyable evening was spent at the Cadena Tearooms recently when Mr and Mrs C. Berryman made tho presentation, and on her \ own behalf presented Mr Donald with a silver split-second stop-watch. Mr A. DANCE. » At the Club-room of the Y.W.C.A. tho girls of the Hostel entertained their friends at a pleasant little dance. The elub-room was prettily decorated and supper was served in tho dining-room, where the tables were gay with pink and mauve flowers. Miss E. Gill, secretary for the Hostel, received the guests wearing a handsome gown of black velvet. Scrimshaw, R. Grant, Rutherford, Graham, and Boycc. W.C.T.U. The usual fortnightly meeting of tho Christchurch branch of tho W.C.T.U. was held on Wednesday. In the absence of Miss Henderson, Mrs Adkins presided. Temperance facts were read. Letters of thanks for sympathy were read from Lady Stout and family, from the relatives of Mr Fred Page, also from Mrs Gilmour, acknowledging sympathy in her illness. The treasurer reported that the recent jumble sale raised over £8 for the funds. Correspondence was read from Mrs Cracroft Wilson (president of the Plunket Society) regarding Violet Day; several members volunteered to assist in the coming street collection. Mrs Cooper was elected as representative on the executive of thi Spring Fair Committee. Mesdames Adkins and Glenn were elected to assist her to collect goods for the stalls, and all members are invited t6 assist in every way possible. Mrs Day was elected hospitality convener, and members were asked to offer the hospitality of their homes to the visitors to the convention 'in September. It was decided to celebrate the birthdays of the senior members, Mesdames Israelsen and Pedler, at the next meeting. The meeting closed with the Benediction. SOCIAL EVENING. * W.E.A. students and their friends held a social evening on Saturday. Exhibitions of Scottish and Irish dances were given by Misses Marjorie and Joyce Fraser. The accompaniments were supplied by Mr Donald Fraser on the bagpipes. Mr F. T. Eullen gave songs, and Mr Greenwood two monologues. Games and dancing were organised, and the social committee supplied refreshments.
