E Holland, Leader of the Labour Party, gave notice of intention to introduce the Goal Mines Amendment Bill. The Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. J. 6. Coates, asked the Minister for Railways whether it was the policy of the Government to dismiss permanent casuals from the Railway Department. He pointed out that in Auckland a number of returned soldiers who were married men, and who were designated as permanent casuals, had received notice of the termination of their engagement on Saturday last. The Minister for Railways said it was not proposed to dismisn these men, but to classify them as emergency casuals in order to avoid hardship. It was the policy of the Department, If there was not enough work to go round to apportion it, and the notice given to the men had been merely formal.
