CYCLING.

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. » The South Island championship road cycle race wag conducted on Saturday by the Southbridge Athletic Club. The course was 36 miles, three rounds of a twelve-mile block, ovar roads that were, generally, of good, firm metal. A brisk wind was the chief impediment to fast pedalling. J. W. Jordan, who rode from three minutes, and covered the distance in lhr 38min 21sec, won the championship title, and was decorated with the blue riband by Mrs W. G. Hill, wife of the president of the Athletic Club. S. A. Jordan, who finished one-fifth of a second later, made the second fastest time. The winner of first place in the race, H. W. Bennett, of Springston, was one of the limit men. He maintained his lead throughout the race, and finished seven seconds ahead of the second man, C. Bearman. Of the two scratch men, L. W. Hill sustained a puncture early in the race, and H. G. Watson rode alone for the rest of the distance, finishing last, but making creditable time. E. A. Fransden won the prize for the fastest man unplaced from ten minutes, and Bennett, the winner of the , race, also won a prise for the youngest rider in the first ten to finish. The officials included Mr W. J. Walter, president, and several members of the North Canterbury Centre of the Athletis and Cycling Union, under the rules of which the race was contested. The Papanui Amateur Sports Club conducted a thirty-mile road race over the usual courea at Harewood on Saturday afternoon. The roads were m good condition after the recent rain, but a bitter easterly wind made the conditions anything but pleasant. Thirty-three riders faced the starter, only half of them completing the full six laps; F. J Gross, L. G. Lukey, G. Farmer, and J. L. Rich aids started off scratch, and were conceding 9min to five riders on the iimit. The first lap. was covered by the leaders in ISmin 20sec. The next bunch of four, off 7Jmin, including T. A. Grose, G. Giles, F. C. Muir, and Selwood, passed at 15min SOeec, having gained a minute on the leaders. The next bunch passed at 17min 43sec, having gained 7sec on the previous bunch. The rider* off the 3imin mark passed at 19min 39sec with W. F. Wilcockson and H. E. Young both off 2|min close behind them. A minute later came W. J. Lamberton at a great speed, having left his co-markers. His riding time for the lap was 13min ssec, while the scratch men took a second longer. In the second lap the TJmm and the Stain men bunched, the former evidently making the ! pace a bit faster, the lap being covered in ! 17sec less time. Lamberton, who was at the back of this bunch, was showing signs of exhaustion, evidently caused by his great effort earlier in this race. At this stage he began to drop back and was soon passed by the scratch rid*ra. At the finish Wilcockson brdke away about three-quartern of a'mils from hone and won by nearly a hundred yards.
