BACK COUNTRY ROADS
USE OF HIGHWAYS FUNDS SUGGESTED. [THE PRESS Special Service.} WELLINGTON, July 18. In the House of Representatives today, Mr W. J. Poison (Stratford) gave notice to ask the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. Mr Ransom) whether the Government would take into consideration the allocation of a moiety of Highways funds to feeder roads, not either main or secondary highways, in order to provide country work for men and create more adequate means of access to the back country, and whether ifc had given any consideration to the raising of a sufficient sum upon the security of the revenue from motor taxation to allow a road construction programme to be proceeded with in anticipation of such revenue, which would absorb the unemployed and assist in improving conditions for the back country settlers.
