RICCARTON NOTES.
♦ Public Übrary. The librarian, Mr E. Vincent Smith, reports that the library shelves are filling, and the organisation is gradually being completed. ' Several enquiries have been made for the book "All Qaiet on the Western Front," but eo far no copies are available. Highways. The suggestion brought forward at the meeting of the Biccarton Citizens' Association that a highway should be constructed from Sockburn to Matson's store, calls to mind a similar proposal made twenty-five years ago. At that time the widening of Biccarton road would have been a comparatively easy and inexpensive wofk, but that chance is lost, and the above suggestion seems to be a reasonable solution of the traffic problem. Parks. Further investigations regarding the trotting area have influenced the Citizens' Association to urge the Council to reconsider the matter of acquiring more than the allotted 4J acres, and a deputation will wait on the Council at its next meeting. The offer of another block of live acres has been received by the Association, but consideration has been held over meanwhile. Dirty Boads. The complaints of cyclists about dirty roads are amply justified. The splashing of mud from passing motor traffic is rather annoying, but is unavoidable at present.
