TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES.
♦ MEETING OF UNION EXECUTIVE. At the meeting of the executive of the Cimstchurch Tramway Employees' Union, held this week, the president, Mr L. V Lilly, was in the chair. As this was "the last meeting of the present executive, the chairman expressed his thanks for and appreciation of the assistance given him during the past vear, and hoped that he would meet them all on next year s executive. On May 14th the Union wrote to the Board stating that in the opinion
of" quite a number of the motormen the serious nature of the accident that had occurred in .Manchester street just previously was due to the fact that all cars were not equipped with sirbiown sand gear, and pointing out that in the Union's opinion an expenditure of £6OO would be a cheap insurance policy, and that apart from the damage done there was always the question of injury to employees, and that the air-blown sand gear would tend to minimise that risk. At the recent meeting, the Board replied that it could not accede to this request. Die letter was received. In reply to the Union"s request that the Board grant free passes to visiting tramwaymen on a reciprocal basis, the Board wrote f+ a * ir \£ thai it was
lof the opinion that this privilege | should be limited to visiting tram*ay athletic teams. It was decided that no further notion be taken. The Christchurch City Council wrote acceding to the Union's request that the sweeper be kept out of Manchester street until after the last cars had c;one through, as it tended to make the rails greasy. A letter appreciative of the Council's action is to be sent. The annual meeting of the Union was fixed for Tuesday naxt.
