The president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce (Mr Edwin Salniond). at a. meeting of the council of that, body this week, drew attention to a statement made by a member of Parliament to the. effect that no weightcould be attached to resolutions passed by the Chamber because the number of men who carried . Fuch resolutions was so small. That seemed to him to be a ridiculous statement to come from a member of Parliament,..when it was considered that a mere handful of men in the House spoke for a million and a quarter of people. Mr Salrnond maintained that the Chamber of Commerce fairly represented the business and commercial community; and when the Chamber of Commerce of the Dominion spoke. Through their executive, with a united voice, that voice became rather : 'a mighty shout." and although thev did not expect H,r. nails of" Jericho 'to fall down, thev did expect the Government to take notice of resolutions which they pas-cd--sucb. for instance. ;is that ursing the rlesirablene*-- of further enquiry beinjr made before the South Island Main Trunk railwny whs proceeded with.
