NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach this morning at 10.37 o'clock and in the river at 11.48 o'clock and to-mor-row at 11.31 a.m. and 12.42 p.m. Borough Council Notes. The auditors hare now completed the official audit of the accounts and books of the Borough, while the office staff are at present busy preparing'the rate notices, which will be ready for issue towards the end of July. The Council has accepted an offer from a firm to demonstrate a tarsealing mixture oi a portion of road at the corner of Richmond terrace and Rodney street. An inspection of the Borough reserves is to be made by the Council on Saturday next, when the proposed Municipal golf course will be given consideration. Seeing that New Brighton is called upon annually to contribute towards the upkeep of the Christchurch Domain, the Borough Council has decided to ask the City Council for a grant towards improvements to the Borough Domains. Presentation to Mrs A. W. Owles. In recognition of the many kindnesses shown by Mrs A. W. Owles during her term as Mayoress, a number of residents met at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. W. Owles, Union street, and the DeputyMayor, Mr F. D. Muirson, presented Mrs Owles with a tea and breakfast set. Senior Cadet Company. At the annual reunion and prize presentation of the New Brighton Senior Cadet Company (A Company sth (c) Battalion, Canterbury Regiment), already reported in Thb Prsss. The following promotions were read out in "Company Orders": —Sergeant D. Harper to be Company-Sergeant Major, vice Com-pany-Sergeant Major B. Brown, transferred to the rield Artillery; Corporal T. J. Reddington to be Sergeant; LanceCorporal Marriott to be Corporal; Sergeant Middle to be commander of No. 1 Platoon. All ranks would, from that date, go on furlough for six weeks. Public Meeting. A public meeting, organised by the Greater Progress Association, is to be held in the Pier Hall on Tuesday. The speakers will be the Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw), Mr D. 6. Sullivan, M.P., and Mr W. E. Leadley. Slot Telephone. The slot telephones in the Borough are giving anything but good service, and complaints are frequent. During this week a resident had a most annoying experience. On one occasion she put in eight pennies with no result, and the following day ten pennies, with no better fortune. Farewell Afternoon. A farewell afternoon was .given in honour of Mrs Alloway, at the home of Mrs T. Hulme, Richmond terrace, New Brighton. Those present were: Mes* dames Hulme, Spedding, Rides, Cull, Scrimshaw, Holloway, Luxton, Davidson, and Miss Grammer. Musical items were given by Mrs L. Scrimshaw, Mrs Davidson, and Miss M. Grammer.

North Beach Progress League. The North Beach Progress League sent a deputation to the la t Borough Council meeting to protest against the treatment meted out to residents of North Beach by the Library Committer. It has been the custom for some years past to allow residents from outlying parts, who can only change their books once a week, or in some cases once a fortnight, to take out two books at a time. When the librarian resigned and the work was done by the Library Committee all subscribers, irrespective o£ distance, were cut down to one book at a time. On top of this grievance came word that a library vote was to be struck. The Progress League explained the position to 'he Council, and received a sympathetic hearing, and it is hoped that the library representative on the Council will be able to persuade the committee to reconsider its new rule. Failing better consideration from the Central Library, it is proposed to call a meeting to discuss ways and means of forming a new library in North Beach. Golf Links. The Progress League, at its next meeting, is to be asked to consider taking up the question of turning the reserve between Pacific and Beach roads into a Municipal Golf Links. Council Work. The Borough Council has at last been able to form the footpath in Bookwood avenue on the south side. A footpath, principally for the safety of school children, is to be formed on the east side of Marriott's road from Racecourse road—t;hus making a continuous footpath from Racecourse road to the North Beach School. The proposal of the new chairman of the Beserves Committee, to plant Norfolk pines along the Esplanade, is interesting, and brings to mind the big effort of the Burgesses' Association in 1919, when a big muster of tree planters, ineluding Dr. Thacker and the then Mayor of New Brighton, planted trees from tha Surf Club pavilion to Berry street. They all died, though those planted by Dr. Thacker were the last to succumb to drought, 'heat, and salt spray. Personal. Mrs Hodgson, infant mistress at the North Beach School, has resigned after 131 years' service, to take up the position of infant mistress of the Papanul School. The Bev. W. F. Knowles is at present in St. George's Hospital. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs H. B. Roscoe in the death of her father, Mr H. Alsop, of Templetoa. Mr A. Florance has been confined to his bed for the last week.
