Naval officers and the British Admiralty pioneered the new system by installing it in sorveying vessels, but difficulty was encountered in catting the necessary holes in the existing ships. Instruments are now being bunt in the shell of the new ships without perforation. Fifty British merchantmen have been fitted inside two vears, among the satisfactory results being the Roval Mail ship Asturias.
