LIGHTER ADRIFT.
EXCITING .RESCUE AT GISBORNE. (PEE3S ASSOCIATION TELROEAM.) GISBORNE, June 1.. Some excitement was caused at Waikanao. Beach this evening when the towline' with which a lighter with a crew of eight men aboard was being towed in after loading the liner Matakana failed. Despite the efforts of the tugs to rig another line, the lighter quickly drifted into the breakers. The night was very stormy and a very heavy, sea was running. Seeing that the position was serious, two members of the Harbour Board staff, B. Morse and R. Patty, and also R. Mortimer, went into the breakers, and after numerous attempts got a line aboard the lighter, by which means the crew were eventually brought ashore.
