THE MINE DISASTER.
FIFTY BODIES RECOVERED. (united pbess association— by electric TELEO3APH —COPYRIGHT.) (Received May 22nd, 5.5 p.m.) .. WASHINGTON, May 21. A message from Mather, Pennsylvania, states that fire broke out in the wrecked mine and impeded rescue work for some hours. Later it was controlled, with no further injuries. The fiftieth body was removed. _ Two miners, whose story is given credence, said that saw-cutting machine severed an electric cable. The sparks ignited the gas and coaldust, and a series of explosions followed. An earlier message stated that the death roll in the mine disaster at Mather totalled 46, and 152 are not accounted for. There is little hope that they are alive. —Australian Press Association, United Service.
