Aston Villa Football Club, in England, has paid the extraordinary sum of £4700 for the transfer of Waring, the Tranmere Rovers' centre-forward. This sum has only been exceeded once —in a transfer in which a Third Division club has been concerned —when Burnley paid Plymouth Argyle £6OOO for Jack Hill. Waring used to sell chocolates on the Tranmere ground when he was a lad. One day he asked for a trial and got it. He has not looked back since.
