ASHBURTON. Y PERSONAL. Mr J. Hislop, Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, who is paying his last official visit to the South Island before retiring, visited Ashburton yesterday. Crushed Finger. William Wilson, employed by Mr R. Beattie, Chertsey, crushed a finger of his left hand while ploughing yesterday. He was treated in the out-patients' department of the County Hospital, where stitches were inserted. Dairy Control. An address upon Dairy Control Board matters was given to suppliers and directors of the Ashburton Dairy Co., Ltd., yesterday by Mr W. Lee, chairman of the Goodwood Dairy Co., Otago, who is contesting the forthcoming Dairy Control Board election. Scottish Society's Ingleside. . The first ingleside of the season, which was conducted in the Orange Hall last evening, was well attended by members of the Ashburton County Scottish Society, the Chief (Mr H. Sinclair) presiding. After the opening number by the Pipe Band, the following , coni tributed a programme arranged by I Messrs H. Cooke and J. Turnbull:— Orchestral selections, Mrs A. Mitchell's orchestra (Mrs Mitchell, Messrs H. Osborne, J. Morris, and E. Frew); songs, i Mesdames C. Parsons and E. G. Craighead, Misses C. Turnbull and Sherwood. Messrs M. McMillan and A. Dolphin; banjo solos, Mr J. Morris; recitations, Miss Shierlaw and Mr D. Osborne; dances, Mr E. Lithgow and Miss Bushell's pupils. At the dance which followed, music was provided by Mrs Mitchell's orchestra. Posting to Territorials. -I Thirty-eight Senior Cadets of B Company Sixth Cadet Battalion, Canterbury Eegiment, were medically examined for transfer to the Territorials on Monday ' evening. Hockey Draw. The draw for the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association's competition matches, to be played next Saturday, is as follows, the referee's name also being mentioned:—Senior—High School v. Old Boys B, at Ashburton, Mr C. Bishop; Methven v. Eakaia, at Eakaia, Mr M. Baker; Old Girls A, a bye. Junior—High School v. Lauriston, at Lauriston,' Mr A. McHardy; Baring Square v. Wakanui, at Ashburton, Mr C. Bishop; Hinds v. Old Girls, at Ashburton, Mr H. A. Humphreys; Methven v. Mt. Somers, at Methven, Mr H. Thompson; Eakaia, a bye. A. and P. Association. The General Committee of the Ashburton A. and P. Association met yesterday, Mr W. J. Doak presiding. The Otago, A. and P. Society wrote stating that in response to requests it was .contemplating holding a conference of A. and P. Associations at Dunedin during- Winter Show week, to discuss show dates, allowances for judges' expenses, privileges, and other matters. The Association was requested to send delegates and subjects for discussion. It was agreed that Mr A. Horsey be asked to represent the Association. Mr Win. Omelvena, Temuka, wrote asking the Association to include the following additional classes in the Ayrshire section for the next show: —Bull born since July Ist, 1927; bull born since July 1, 1926; cow, any age, in milk; dry'cow, any age, best Ayrshire.— Eeferred to the Cattle Committee.

In reply to the Association's request that top-dressing experiments should be carried out in the Ashburton County, Mr J. W. Hadfield, Department of Agriculture, wrote stating that it would be possible to undertake the work.but owing to Departmental changes it would be better to hold the matter over in the meantime. Mr E. M. Bates had been appointed assistant • instructor in agriculture with headquarters at Ashburton. The matter of co-operative topdressing trials would be considered about the end of May.

On the motion of Mr F. Frampton, consideration of the letter was held over until next meeting. The Association was requested to appoint delegates 'and forward remits to the annual conference of the Eoyal Agricultural Society. The committee decided to take no action with regard to voting. It was agreed that the president and secretnrv attend the conference. Mr J." B. Nicoll was elected a member of the Association. It was decided to.hold the annual show on November Ist. The chairman announced that the secretary had interviewed the Minister for Agriculture on his way south recently, and the Minister had stated that_ if found possible, he would break his journey at Ashburton on his return north. Mr H. Brown said it would be as well to ask the Minister if there was any truth in the statement that it was intended to transfer the activities of the Experimental Farm from Ashburton to Rangiora. He also suggested that the Minister should be asked to provide an area of land more suitable for demonstration purposes. It was pointed out that the present area was owned by the High School, and the lease had recently been, re ' ' Mr H. C. B. "Withell strongly advo cated the holding of a ewe .flock competition, and referred to the success of

the Methven competition. t The proposal was strongly supported by Messrs Morris and H. Martin. Mr Doak considered that anything that tended to improve the flocks of the county was worthy of support. He suggested limiting the competition to members of the Association. Mr Morris explained that the sheep would be judged on the farm. The matter was referred to the Sheep Committee for a report. i Ladles' Golf. The following is the draw for the sealed-hole bogey match to be played tomorrow:—Senior: Mrs R. Kennedy and Miss Z. Mr James Carr left on Monday evening for Wellington.

Miss E. Washington (Albury) is the guest of Mrs Hector Reid. At the usual monthly meeting of the committee of the Methven A. and P. Association, Mr S. G. Holmes gave notice that he would move at the annual meeting: "That the entry fees be revised." The following sub-com-mittee was appointed to confer with representatives of the Methven Farmers' Union as to the best means for the entertainment of the visiting Marlborough farmers: Messrs R- J Low,-Jno. Watson, S. G. Holmes, J. McAnulty, and H. J. Freeman. Ihe secretary of the Methven Trotting Club wrote advising that, at the last mi?eting of the club, the following motion was carried: "That this club is of the opinion that one ground is rll that is necessary for the A. and P. Association and the Trotting Club, and that a conference of both bodies is desirable in the interests of the district." It was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting. BARRHILL. At a meeting held in the Barrhill Schoolroom it was decided to form a sub-branch of the Plunket Society. It was agreed to hold meetings alternately at Lauriston and Barrhill, and that local members provide afternoon tea. Meetings will be held every third Thursday in the month. The election of officers resulted as follows .-—President. Mrs A. Sandrey; vice-president, Mrs Church: secretary, Mrs 0. E. Hooper. All present were elected a committee with the addition of Mrs Clemens. HINDS. The members of the Hinds Miniature Rifle Club met on the range on Monday evening, Mr J. A. Thompson presiding over a good attendance. Mr A. McKenzie forwarded a cheque to be spent' at the discretion of the club. Mr S. Watson was appointed delegate to the conference in Ash burton. S.
