DRAINAGE BOARD.

ORDINARY MEETING. A meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board was held last night, and was attended by Messrs H. J. Otley (chairman), W. J. Walter, H. G. Livingstone, W. Large, A. T. Smith, C. S. McCully, H. Hill, C. Hill, J. W. Beanland, E. H. S. Hamilton, and S. C. Bingham. Mr E. J. Hobbs (secretary of the Canterbury Eowing Association) wrote drawing attention to the shallow con- . dition of the rowing course, and asking if the Board could re-sweep the course in readiness for the next rowing season, which commenced in September. The letter was referred to the River Improvement Committee. On behalf of owners of sections fronting Harrison street, St. Albans, Mr J. W. H. Frances wrote asking the Board to give land off its section for widening the street and to contribute to the cost of formation. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Residents in the vicinity of Snelling's drain wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the drain. This matter also was referred to the Works. Committee, with power to act. Finance Committee. On tho recommendation of the Finance Committee accounts amounting to £2617 15s 7d on the general account and £18,248 6s 3d on the No. 7 loan account were passed for payment. The committee reported that in view of the large amount of postal matter that would be handled in the future it had authorised the secretary to purchase a franking machine. The question of allocation of cost in connexion with the Woodham road and Carnarvon street subsoil drainage scheme had again been considered, and the committee could not see its way to depart from the allocation already made. This clause was referred back to the committee. * The Finance Committee was given authority for granting loans and for the passing of payment of accounts arising from house connexion loans. Bates. Rates in each of the Board's sub-dis-tricts were fixed as under:—Sewerage area, id in the £ ; rural Christchurch, 3-64 din the £; rural Woolston, 3-32 d in the £; rural New Brighton, l-64d in the £; rural Spreydon, 3-64 din the £; rural Avon, 7-32 din the £; rural Heathcote, l-16d in the £; rural Riccarton, l-16d in the ■£. Horseshoe Lake. The special sub-committee reported that as the outcome of a conference between the He'alth Department (Colonel Dawson), the Public Works Departinent (Mr Langbein), and representatives from the Board (Messrs Beanland and Walter), Mr Langbein had notified his intention to recommend the Public Works Department to provide the sum of £225 as their share of the cost of erecting a floodgate on the outlet of Horseshoe Lake, the balance of £75 to be provided by the Board or the pro-perty-owners in the vicinity who would benefit by the erection of such floodgate.
