ON DIVORCE.
"THERE SHOULD BE RELEASE." Miss ROYDEN'S VIEWS. "What do you think of divorce?" was a question that was asked of Miss Maude Boyden at the Choral Hall last night. ' i "I feel," Miss Boyden replied, "that if a marriage is a complete /and hopeless failure there should be release. I think it is as disastrous as a bankruptcy in business, and I was brought up to think that a bankruptcy was a disgrace, and so it is sine times out of ten. It is a disaster not only to the bankrupt himself and to his creditors, but to the .business world, for it shakes credit; and a failure in marriage is not only a disaster to the husband and the wife and to the children, but to all of us, because it shakes our faith in human nature. The credit of human faith in nature goes down. It is absolutely bankrupt, and it isn't moral, but immoral, to pretend that it is a mai riage." "It makes me wild when people spread the silly rumour that I uphold companionate marriage," Miss Roydea added. "People who go into this extra ordinary communion to see.if they are going to hit it off are not married at all. If you make a mistake, and God knows there is no subject on which it is easier (there is nothing so glamorous as passion), and if nothing is left—love, respect, a common home, children —then I think it is better to recognise the facts. All that makes a marriage sacred has gone." Misa Eoyden said that people would quote the injunction, ""Whom God hath joined let no man put asunder," but there were some we called married whom God never joined together at all. She did not think that it was good or brave or honourable to enter into marriage unless peopla believed that their love had an eternal quality.
